Some points,

This was months before Benn/Watson.

This was months before the Eubank/Graham fights at Wincobank, interesting to note Eubank’s respect for Graham’s ability already.

Eubank had a history of getting overly cocky and needing to be brought back down to earth. He won the opening round Vs Mark Breland in the ams in NY actually outjabbing him, and needed to be driven to Gleasons Gym in March 84 to unswell his head (or rather swell his head physically) thrown in with Davey Moore and Alex Ramos.

He knocked Graham out cold in the opening round of their first spar. The next sessions consisted of Graham standing Eubank on his head for four rounds before Ron Essett jumped in for four (and Slugger O’Toole the final four) in prep for Graham’s McCallum fight.

At the time of that article, he was living in Karron’s mums house in a box room with Karron on a sofabed.

Well, it was only two months before Watson-Benn and only two months before Mike McCallum dished out a belting to Graham at the Albert Hall, in a fight which looked much closer on TV than it did from ringside. Dennie Mancini turned to me at the verdict and said, "lucky to get the split" because Graham lost by a split decision.

Must’ve been one of those rare illusions then Bennie, where TV deceives your very eyes into making you believe Graham won the first five rounds (other than maybe the third) leaving Mike bewildered in there. Despite video evidence, it didn’t happen.

As per usual Bomber’s huge legs tired and he soon became ragged, relying on wrestling moves towards the end.

Ex-pro Steve Holdsworth did the piece on Eubank, who was coming off his big win over Anthony Logan. I remember Keith Miles doing a lot of talking in the piece. It was an exciting time for domestic boxing when Boxing Monthly was launched in early 1989, with Watson outclassing Benn, Dave McAuley thumping Duke McKenzie, Glenn McCrory outpointing Patrick Lumumba, Jim McDonnell stopping Barry McGuigan on cuts, Gary Jacobs ending the long unbeaten run of George Collins, Lennox Lewis turning pro, Pat Barrett chinning Liverpool's Tony Willis for the British title... It just went on and on in 1989.

It definitely was. Launched in 1982. Supplied most of my Friday night TV in my teens.

There was probably some boxing on bbc2 anyway so we’ll call it 75%. If that’s not too much math for any peabrain to handle.

He was a very good amateur. They're bringing a film out next year with all the old cast. God knows how they're going to do it. I'm just hoping Gripper isn't in it, can't do with anymore sleepless nights.

I remember the first issue of BM very well. Tyson was on the cover in silouhette.

BM was cutting edge at the time because it was glossy and in colour. It was full of info but went downhill when Barry Hugman sold it in late 1991.

The adverts in them are interesting. VHS video tapes like " The best of Mike Tyson" cost £12.99 !

Be nice if someone digitised them so we had an online archive.

Boxing Monthly scared the hell out of Harry Mullan and Boxing News with proper unbiased reporting, great photos, ratings, awards, a big amateur section - it was all good. Steve Holdsworth launched the magazine in early 1989 by word of mouth at the shows and Derek O'Dell covered the British and American scenes brilliantly. Derek was old school, a throwback to the era of Terry Downes and fight nights at Shoreditch Town Hall, where boxing took second place to tear-ups. Within a few months, Boxing Monthly was selling as many issues as Boxing News, which had been around for over 100 years. Sadly, the owners of Boxing Monthly got greedy and squeezed out the original journalists for monkeys and the heady early days were gone.

Interesting take. I found the early BM rather dry and thought it picked up under the dynamic duo of Leach and Houston. By the mid-90s it was the essential boxing magazine.

Went downhill from the mid-2000s, some bad choices by Leach but mostly due to the decline of boxing. Leach himself admitted on Boxrec what they were selling was barely of interest to boxing fans, let alone casuals.
