Just been reading some old threads and noticed folk refer to the hand size of certain fighters in an effort to determine their handiness. I've never correlated hand size with ability to fight. Same with the unlicensed stuff, seen a few posts mentioning how some guy had hands like a bunch of bananas. Surely hand size can't be a contributable factor in a gloved fight, nor a bare fist one for that matter.

Sonny Liston had massive fists. He carried some power.

I would have thought big hands/fists is an advantage even when gloved up?

and wouldnt a smaller first on someone the same size as you actually concentrate the force and maximize impact over a given area if anything

dunno if its a coincidence but most of the punchers iv worked with got fairly big hands and usualy realy solid and sturdy.A lot of lesser punchers have smaller and usualy more fragile looking hands if that makes sense

Sort of makes sense though. Bigger hands = more weight

two guys who are both 200 pounds are the same weight, regardless of their fist weight. you put your body weight into a punch

take the same size force, and it will do greater damage to an area if it is concentrated in a smaller area then if it is spread out over a larger one. if anything, physics supports smaller hands doing more damage

would huge ass, 50 ounce gloves make someone hit harder than if they fought bare knuckle?

Smaller hands in terms of smaller bone structure must make them more susceptible to damage?

If have massive thick set hands then would likely be able to take more abuse?

Power doesn`t come from fist size, but in terms of damage to your own hands when punching I would think it has to be an advantage

maybe........but most hand size differences are usually minor among people who are pretty much the same size overall. bigger guys have bigger hands, but they also hit harder too.

i think hand size importance is massively overblown and mostly myth tbh

I,ve got big hands i also know i can hit hard been told often enough but thats more to do with technique nothing to do with hand size , however one problem i ha ve had forever is wrists , my wrists would be average and my hands say extra extra large i know if i hit the bag i have to realy strap the wrists because if i hit wrong i feel it in the wrists actually broke both wrists over the years , some fighters are very unlucky they have fragile hands Jeff Fenech springs straight to mind

dont think it matters really as long as u land, yea bare knuckle it looks intimidating, my brother has scared up hands my da has shovels till some one said i had big hands alaways thought mine were small , no lie i think it is like the old knob size thing

I've reavaluated my thinking somewhat. Dont think fist size makes an iota of difference in gloved boxing but have an inkling the bare fist boxing types will likely have knuckledragging sized hands, just feel it goes with territory for whatever random reason.

I think it makes some difference. But it's very slight. Broad shoulders and explosive muscles must be more important

I saw Lawrence Okolie on TV commentating in the studio and his hands looked tiny, especially for someone 6'5" then I heard Shane McGuigan talking about doing pad work with fighters and he commented that Okolie has small hands but hit very hard.

i mean, do dudes think fighters would hurt each other more wearing those absolutely ginormous novelty gloves, rather than tiny 4 ouncers?

Yeah it's rumoured he also had a massive cock. However on the other hand...

Considering that Shaq recently admitted to actually standing 6'11", maybe Wilder's claim of 6'7" should be questioned based on the photo of them standing next to each other.

Bigger hands possibly more robust, less likely to break.
