Burley dominates Pernell and stops him, as would Sugar Ray Robinson.

Burley would out-box and out-counter Sweet Pea to take a decision in 15 rounds.

A lot has been said of Burley, and he is certainly one of the greatest middleweights to have never won the title. Eddie Futch said he was the best he ever saw which is quite the big praise.

That being said, he did lose to Lloyd Marshall and Holman Williams and Ezzard Charles and Jimmy Bivins. He wasn't unbeatable.

Pernell was probably the greatest defensive fighter I ever saw in my lifetime. He was robbed of a win against Chavez, demonstrating that he could be just as gifted offensively as he was defensively--- and earlier on in his career he was blatantly robbed in what Ring Magazine called the worst decision of the decade against Jose Luis Rameriz.

I would say he is in that same stratosphere of greatness as guys like Burley and the rest of murders row. I think he gives Burley a pretty tough tactical battle and probably comes away with a majority or split decision win.

Charley Burley on points. The great Pernell Whitaker would be fighting a real Welterweight great this time.
