PHOTOS WANTED

hi everyone
just an update to everyone on here
i am a collector of boxers photos 1885 -1985 and now have just about all the fighters i want apart from adding those elusive guys who never seemed to have their photo taken such as Jaime Valladares.
the only ones i really want from the dim and distant past are a pair of Germans from the late 30s, Herman Remscheid and Rudolf Kretzschmar and a couple of Englishmen from the early 1900s, Slounch Dixon and Mike Crawley.
Ric has been brilliant in the past helping me with photos but even he cant locate the two Germans and i have almost given up on Crawley as his grandson has been researching his ancestor for 25 years without finding a decent photo. That leaves me with Slounch Dixon so if anyone has any helpful information on him however slight please get in touch. it goes without saying, if i can help anyone with a photo i will. my email address is

Not the best image I appreciate, but it is at least something.
I may very well be able to get hold of something similar for Slounch Dixon. I will get back to you on this

hi Miles
i hope you are well and thank you for posting the image of Mike Crawley
i do actually have that image already either from Crawley's great grandson or from Harold Alderman
if you have anything similar on Slounch Dixon or Cloggy Saunders for that matter id be most grateful
i think its about all i can hope for now.
im pursuing Dixon by joining the East End of London Geneology Society and have also had a professional
geneologist spending a few hours looking but to no avail. According to Harold he was a costermonger and
was still in business in 1925 so would have been well known in the neighbourhood.
Ill keep trying but starting to think its a lost cause
There are a few others i can look at now.
As always Miles, if i can be of any help to you with photos id be only too happy to do so.
Btw, saw you on telly the other night strapping a belt on to someone
all the best
David

Thanks David. I have searched in vain for a picture of Dixon. I am pretty sure there isn't one. The Mirror of Life did not publish a picture, nor did Boxing or Boxing World. My big hope was the Sporting Man, a Newcastle paper, where I found the one of Crawley, but when he fought up there they did not publish a picture. Lost cause I think
Yes, I was steward-in-charge at Newcastle when Troy Williamson retained his British title, hence my appearance in the ring to present him with his belt.
A good lad is Troy.

I have copies of Sporting Life 1900 to 1929, Boxing News 1909 to 1995, Mirror of Life 1899 to 1919 and Boxing World 1909 to 1912 all scanned on my computer system. I have indexed most of them and know where the photographs are as well as all of the fight reports. I have about 140,000 individual fight reports back to 1900 separately filed as well as all of the results and records. Detailed records for 79,000 UK boxers and a database of nearly 500,000 individual results. A lifetime of work but I can now find almost everything for all UK boxers during the twentieth century.
It sure as hell keeps me busy!

i know you have a vast collection Miles so im guessing you must have a big house, haha
i used to go to the Newspaper library when it was walking distance from me but as soon as i retired
they moved it up your way. i wish now i had gone more often. its now a vast block of flats
its sad that all the old time photo collectors have gone now, Norman Jones, Tom Crome, Owen Hughes
ive virtually given up on Dixon as Harold, Barry Hugman and yourself dont have photos but as i believe
i said, i have joined The East London Family History Society so will look for anyone with that surname.
We are going to stay for a week with the Hugmans at the beginning of May as Barry is 81 tomorrow and
im nearly 77 so who knows what lies ahead. Barry hasnt been too well lately and we have been friends
since i was 8.
it was great seeing you on the telly and looking in such fine fettle
Best wishes for now Miles

hi there
there used to be lots of photo collectors around the country, Tom Crome, Owen Hughes, Bill Matthews and Norman Jones to name but four and we used to buy sell and swap photos between us and with others in the USA. i was lucky enough to live walking distance from the British Newspaper Library which has now moved up to Yorkshire since i retired and is also now tranferring everything to microfilm. Also in, say, the 1960s the turn of the 20th century was only 60 years previous so access to old magazines and newspapers was much easier than now when the turn of the 20th century is a hundred and twenty years ago. it was great researching boxers and i spent 15 years locating a photo of Corporal Brown, the Army heavyweight and about 10 years looking for a photo of Emile Morelle including a week in France with my poor french.
now you can find just about any photos you want on the internet so in a way it has taken the fun out of collecting but times move on in everything
i do have about 6000 photos of different fighters and would be happy to let you have copies of some that you need if you wish
you can see most of mine on my website...www,fightersFOTOS.co.uk, with best wishes, David

I used to visit Tom Crome regularly. I have quite a lot of his original ledgers in my collection. I also used to correspond with Owen and Bill during the 1970s. Never knew Norman Jones. I am still in regular contact with Harold Alderman and Derek O'Dell.

sadly i heard that Bill passed away three or four years ago Miles. he used to come and stay with us for a
week when he used to visit the library. i know Derek is still going strong (think hes indestructible) but i havent seen him for years. i know you are a steward for the Board Miles but i feel the heyday of normal boxing has passed now and its more like showbiz. anyway, off to footie now and hope Barnet can manage a win
