A boxers athletic prowess versus other sports folk.

Boxing is an incredibly taxing activity draining of energy, but how do boxers rate in overall anaerobic and aerobic terms vs athletes from other disciplines.
There used to be a TV show named Superstars that pitted athletes form varying sports into head to head competition, slightly before my time but don’t think boxers fared as well as I thought they would. On balance think the rugby guys had the best overall physical prowess. It just seems logical boxers would be uber successful at multisport competition but not sure they actually are. Can remember Carl Froch doing Striclty or dances on ice or some other likeminded show of drivel, part of his routine was to pick his partner above his head, you could see his body visibly shaking as he struggled to push this svelte young girl above his head.

Yeah - AJ was great on it. He probably did better then than he would now.
Ricky Hatton was awful though. Strangely I think I remember him saying it was one of his big regrets turning up to do that so out of shape.

Des Drummond the little leaguie winger was great on Superstars, so was Brian Jack's the judo guy with his questionable dips technique and his sliding squat thrusts.

John Conteh did good on Superstars, won a couple from what I remember. Joe Bugner did ok too.

Jack's was more famous for Superstars than Judo. Obviously before his incident with Mickey Pearce and Gary Stretch in Thailand.

Boxers are sooooo varried. most sports have a a mold to fit. Basketball players are tall and explosive, soccer/football players are fairly quick have cardio for days ect.
Boxers have guys that in a different life could of been weight lifters, or sprinters, or jockys, or anything inbetween. Not many sports where to Fury and inoue could both be elite...

I remember Maurice Hope appearing in Superstars and he was terrible. I also remember Kevin Keegan coming off his bike. Great series.

Yes, great series. I seem to remember Stracey, Minter and Dave Boy Green appeared on it too but didn't fare so well.
Conteh used to excel in the gym tests and weight lifting but was pretty good at everything really, though he was still an active fighter.

We should have got Larry on there when he was juiced. He was a very good sprinter, apparently. He'd have done us proud, and I bet there was no VADA.

Larry did 10.7 for the 100m (clean, I believe, so dirty would have been about 10.2 or so). That's brisk.

The time creeps quicker and quicker. Wasn’t it 11 seconds originally in boxing interviews? That’s decent county level standard. Can’t see him on any 100 metre results.
In the train like the SAS type programs, it always seemed to be the triathletes who were head and shoulders better than the other sports people.

Boxing is a very unique sport and I don't think transfers that well with other sports. Look at how boxers stand in the ring - chin tucked in, hand up, legs and back slightly crouched and with "walking" in a shuffle - no other sport is similar really.
I tihink in terms of "superstars" it will invariable depend on the skills involved and if it fits within a boxers drills. I remember a retired Barry McGuigan doing it in the revival of Superstars - way past it compared to the others but still smashed them in some events (e.g. squat thrusts) but was pretty awful in others.
Amir Khan also did it and he smashed them in running but was awful in others.

Nothing will beat the Brian Jacks, Mickey Pearce, Gary Stretch story.
Do tell....
It goes something like this Jimbo...
After his glittering award winning acting 'career' Stretchy moves to Thailand and starts hob-nobbing with the expat Brit celebrities over there which includes Micky Pearce and Brian Jacks, they all go to a bar Jacks owns in Pattaya and becoming good friends.
It seems Micky Pearce has money troubles so Stretchy lends him some money but Mickey Pearce fails to pay him back so Stretchy gives him a good hiding over it. So relations sour amongst the Pattaya 'Rat Pack'
So one night, Stretchy and Brian Jacks - who must have been around 86 years old at the time were having a drink and Stretchy decided to show the beast of Superstars some of his boxing moves and gives Jacks a crack, where Jacks then gets Stretchy into a choke hold and proceed to choke him out
There might be more than connects the story, it is missing a fairytale ending of some kind but it is comedy of the highest order.

The athletes from Athletics were best overall on Superstars I'd say. Remember pole vaulter Brian Hooper won the world Superstars title. Mind you Canadian footballer Brian Budd won it three times, judo player and Superstars legend Brian Jacks used to bend the rules on the gym tests the little tinker. Quite a few Brien's there.
