Sunny Edwards vs Julio Cesar Martinez fight ‘agreed’ live on air by Schaefer and Hearn!

Richard Schaefer and Eddie Hearn agreed live on national radio that the huge flyweight unification clash between Sunny Edwards and Julio Cesar Martinez must be made.

Edwards expertly defended his IBF title at Probellum Evolution in Dubai on Saturday night and immediately turned his attention to fighting Mexico’s WBC belt holder Martinez next.

Probellum President Schaefer was in the talkSPORT studio on Tuesday (March 22) talking to host Jim White when Matchroom chief Hearn joined them to discuss the chances of the unbeaten Edwards meeting Martinez.

Both strongly agreed that should the WBC champion come through a mandatory title defence later this year then the fight with Edwards has to happen.

Edwards, nicknamed ‘Showtime’, then joined them on the phone from his sun lounger on holiday in Dubai to reinforce that he is ready and waiting to take on Martinez.

“Can you two get a deal on here?!” asked Jim White.

“I think everybody wants that fight,” said Eddie Hearn.

“Edwards is a character and talk about rubbing people up the wrong way! He’s a great guy, he’s very outspoken and he’s a very good fighter. He is, maybe, maybe the best in the division, but it’s between those two.

“Martinez against Sunny Edwards is definitely a fight that we need to see.”

“This is one of the most talked about fights, and I agree with your assessment of Sunny, I think he is an amazing self-promoter and he has the skills to back it up,” added Richard Schaefer.

“He’s a trash talker but he really he can fight – he’s got it all.”

Hearn added: “There’s a great narrative in the fight and history, because don’t forget that Julio Cesar Martinez knocked out Sunny Edwards’ brother Charlie Edwards for the WBC world title. But he actually hit him when he was on the floor after knocking him out and the fight was ruled a no contest.

“There will be a lot of trash talking and Sunny is a nightmare! He’s been having pops at Eddy Reynoso, at Canelo, of which Julio Cesar Martinez is part of the team, so the build-up is everything you want in a fight, you want two guys to go at it.”

Hearn went onto say: “Maybe you do one fight in London and one in California?”

“Sunny is a headliner, particularly here in the UK as well, so I’m sure we could build a nice show around it and have some Matchroom fighters against some Probellum fighters and have some fun with it!” said Schaefer.

IBF champion Edwards then surprised Hearn, to join the call and said: “It’s the fight that makes the most sense.

“There are other good fights out there for both of us, in the division, but when you really think about it, there’s no other fight with the back story and with the pre-made build up.

“It’s a very interesting fight because it’s two completely conflicting styles and it’s splitting opinion pretty much down the middle because if you ask half the people, then I’m getting knocked out in a matter of minutes and the other half is telling everyone I’m going to school him.

“I think that’s just great for boxing and like Eddie said, it can happen anywhere.”

It sounds as "Agreed" as Joshua v Wilder was.

I think Martinez's stock has been hurt a little since the Chocolatito fight.

I mean he was out-boxed and out-classed by a living legend P4P great.. No shame in that..

But Sunny is a master boxer too.

JCM didn’t look great or adaptable against Gonzalez.
Before the fight I didn’t think Edwards could win but now it’s 50/50 imo.

Martinez for me, too tough for Edwards.

Sunny on the back foot at his most disciplined can nick it with his footwork but he'll have to weather a lot of early pressure I'd say, he certainly won't get away with fighting off the ropes like he did in spots v Waseem but not a chance he'd be looking to do that again v a proven puncher in JCM. No idea if we'll see Martinez at that weight again though interesting one.

I dont care how slick and cute sunny can be, with his complete lack of power i think martinez gets him eventualy. Martinez could take 5 to land 1...

You dont need to be a banger, but its tough at the top levle when you hit like an anemic 12 year old girl in a pillow fight.

Edwards brother is a quality boxer, but Martinez keeps coming, closes the distance and cuts off the ring effectively, it's a matter of time.

JCM got beaten up pretty well vs Choco. Lack of confidence, limitations exposed a bit, weight struggles means that if Edwards is anywhere near world class he gets a points decision 8-4.

i think choco's better than sonny (possibly far better, i mean he's an atg) and he has a totally different style. constant pressure and exceptionally skilled infighting, respectable pop. whereas sonny's a pillow handed pot shot mover..........choco was able to beat martinez in his own domain, get his respect, and martinez had no other options since he's fairly one dimensional

vs edwards, martinez will undoubetdly be the stronger guy and wont be getting hit nearly as hard or as much. he'll be the guy who wins a fire fight and on the inside if it gets there. i also think it's unlikely sonny is as hard as choco. jcm will have an advantage in some aspect, unlike vs chocolatito who just flat out owned him. but he does have his limit sskillwise and has lost the plot a bit with weight.

sonny is a skillful guy and has a good chance of outboxing him to win a decision for sure. pot shots and lots of movement, make it hard for jcm to set his feet for the haymakers. if sonny starts underdog he's worth a bet. but i think it's undervaluing jcm to think that all sonny needs is to be anywhere near world level and he beats him. i think it still takes a fully world level guy (which sonny i think is ) to do it if jcm can get on form again. that is an if though....

this is a fight where the momentum's changed quite a bit, jcm's stock has dropped and sonny has proven to be pretty respectable moving up the levels. thought the total 0 power would have held him back already but he's kept winning and doing it clearly.

Sunny was right up there with Kinahan. If anyone is banned, it'll be him. Maybe they are looking at making it elsewhere.

So, back in March. It was agreed that the fight must be made. Here we are in July and there is still talk of it being made.

I can imagine Matchroom are a bit hesitant about making a fight with Probellum.

Also, JCM had his mandatory, which is still hanging on to him so not sure what has changed now.

Why does Hearn need to do it in the U.K.? Edwards has shown no evidence of being able to sell tickets over here and it’s unlikely to be a fight to drive DAZN subs despite it being a great fight.

It’s a much bigger fight in the US due to the Mexican following. As Mickey says though it’s unlikely Edwards will be able to make it over there.

It’s also probably a bigger fight in Mexico. They could get Canelo to push, get loads of fans, a good time in the US and a class atmosphere that’d be much better than 4,000 in the O2.

Mags baby, I feel on you on Choc likely being a lot better than Edwards and he’s a different style but that was a bad bad beat down and probably should’ve been stopped.
Edwards has a v good chance imo.
