Former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora is due to be sentenced today for shooting his girlfriend over a minor traffic accident.
Spadafora - unbeaten in 39 fights and known as the "Pittsburgh Kid" - has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and a weapons violation.
Prosecutors say Spadafora shot Nadine Russo in 2003 because he was upset she had punctured two tyres on his luxury 'hummer' vehicle after driving over some rough ground.
The two are still together and have a baby boy.
Spadafora could face 17 years in prison.

It's a bizzare story. Can't see him getting 17 years though - he'll no dout have Nadine pleading his case in court - what's everyones best guess he ends up getting? Parole??

I think it's a myth that the guilty party have to press charges, J, certainly in some cases.

I'm sure the coppers could just take it upon themselves to go ahead with prosecuting when some loon is out brandishing and firing a gun.

I'm pretty sure that firearms offences would involve the district attorney pressing for a prosecution, irregardless of the spouse. It's only common assault where someone has to press charges.

If it's aggravated assault, GBH or anything along those lines, I'm pretty sure that the judiciary make a unilateral decision.

Bet she wont mess with his Hummer again.

PITTSBURGH - Former lightweight boxing champion Paul Spadafora was sentenced to up to five years in state prison for shooting his fiancee 16 months ago, but he could get out in as little as six months if he completes a boot-camp program.

The sentencing closes the most serious chapter of several alcohol- or drug-fueled run-ins for Spadafora, 29, of McKees Rocks. The relatively lenient sentence could enable Spadafora to resume a still-promising career.

In asking for leniency, Spadafora told Allegheny County Judge Jeffrey Manning that he needs one last chance to lick his drinking problem.

"If you just could give me just a little chance, I'll make you so proud, I'll make this whole city proud by doing the right thing for my (fiancee) and my son," Spadafora said.

Spadafora in December pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and a weapons violation in the shooting of Nadine Russo, 22, who is now the mother of his infant son, Geno. Spadafora was upset that she flattened two tires while driving his Hummer and shot Russo once with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun on Oct. 26, 2003.

On Wednesday, prosecutors withdrew the weapons charge. County Assistant District Attorney Ed Borkowski said prosecutors have since learned that Spadafora likely had a license to carry the gun.

Spadafora's promoter, Michael Acri, of Erie, said there are no concrete plans for Spadafora to fight again.

"Really, it's beating alcohol abuse, it's not about career plans at this point," Acri said.

In July, Spadafora stopped Francisco Campos in the third round to win his second straight fight since moving up to junior welterweight. Spadafora, who is undefeated, had given up his IBF lightweight (135-pound) title in 2003 so he could move up to the junior welterweight division, where it would be easier to maintain his weight.

Apparently, Spadafora went to shoot Russo in the arse at close range and was so pissed the gun lurched upwards and the bullet lodged in her tit. This boot camp? Anyone know what it's like?
