Hughie Fury vs Michael Hunter terms agreed, planned for July

Both men sit in the WBA top five

Boxxer’s Ben Shalom revealed today that Hughie Fury and Michael Hunter have agreed to terms for a heavyweight tussle that could go down in early July.

It’s a return to meaningful matchups for both men, as they’ve been content to face limited opposition since their respective run-ins with Alexander Povetkin. Fury (26-3, 15 KO) lost wide to “Sasha” before cruising past familiar victims Pavel Sour, Mariusz Wach, and Christian Hammer.

Hunter (20-1-2, 14 KO) seemed poised for contention after beating Sergey Kuzmin and drawing with Povetkin, but instead smashed the hideously over-matched Shawn Laughery, bailed on an IBF eliminator to crush the equally incompetent Mike Wilson, and drew with Jerry Forrest.

The Wilson fight was supposedly a WBA eliminator of some sort, but I guess it...wasn’t? He’s No. 2 in the rankings, but Daniel Dubois got the shot at Trevor Bryan first and I imagine a mandatory title fight for “Dynamite” will be on the table before a bout with Hunter.

In any event, it’s a decent clash of sub-elite big men on paper. As for how entertaining it’ll be, I plead the Fifth.

Good fight for Hughie. Hunter was poor against Forest and lucky to get a draw but it’d be Shades’ best win and will help with rankings as Hunter is number 2 in the WBA and top 10 with WBC and WBO.

Agreed. Will be hideous to watch but they both need a fight like this. They both lose to the best and have mostly beaten third rate fighters. This is an opportunity for both of them to beat an established top 25 guy which would arguably be their best heavyweight win.

You have to say it whilst gargling with marbles.

Which incidentally is Adam Smith's Pawnee Tribe name.

Why couldn't this fight be made/agreed when both were under Matchroom?

could be a hard night for fury as he isnt the quickest and hunter bounces around like a tigger toy and will be very hard to hit .
maybe hughie can slow him down later on and get the KO - hope so as hunter is such a mouthpiece and deserves to be clocked .

It just feels like a close fight either way. Neither man puts a stamp of authority on fights

He'll get his man strength when Danny Williams daughter finishes her education 😉

I make Hunter the favourite.

I had Hunter beating Povetkin 7-5 in their bout but either way a close one. Povetkin beat Fury with room to spare.

I just see him coming at Fury and landing clean enough to take the rounds.

I still believe that Fury can do well if he puts everything together. It's a big "if" I know...

Under Matchroom, Hunter got a fight against a guy who beat Hughie Fury.

Hunter’s very tough to match. Heavyweights premier member of the who needs him club.

And Hughie is a horrendous sell. His best win being one where the opponent withdrew through injury.

I reckon Hughie has the right tools to beat Hunter. Probably points.

When you watch Savannah Marshall you see the Peter Fury style in all its glory and she has such power in both hands that it just works really well. I can’t think of a trainer that suits Marshall better to be fair.

It will do for Clarissa Shields and the rest.

With Fury tho it just doesn’t seem right. The number of jabs where he misses by a mile and the way he goes flying backwards into retreat when someone comes at him. It’s just woefully ineffective once you reach a certain level hence the clear defeats to Pulev and Povetkin.

Hunter fought Povetkin a few months after Fury and I had him winning 115-113. From memory most in the rbr had it similar but obviously close enough that a draw isn’t terrible. Hunter slugged it out with Povetkin tho. He has good work rate and no sign his chin has any problems.

Let’s hope and pray.

Otherwise we’ll have another 3 month period of people realising Hughie isn’t capable of beating a top 15 heavyweight.

forest is a tough dude but man did he look inept vs pulev, a few decent lefts but mostly got clowned and beaten up

tbf pulev beat hughie widely too, albeit a good few years ago now

i think hughie should edge hunter in an awful fight. should be able to do enough slapping and jiving and juking as hunter tries to come in.
