Often boxers just starting on pro cards are stuck with expenses when opponents drop at the last minute. Few if anyone is going to enforce a low dollar contract to engage club fights.

What are the rules regarding posting a cancellation penalty fee that considers the expenses of both boxers and their management costs?

I just had a welter weight have three boxers drop after they agreed to take the fight. We packed up, purchased flights, rooms, etc., and then got stuck with the bill last minute.

Promoters seem a little lean on reimbursements. This is bad business and bad for the face of the sport.

All advice appreciated.

Can boxers take out any insurance?

They class themselves as self employed don’t they?

What kind of rules do you refer to? State, federal, local, WBA, IBF, WBC, EU?

I can tell you that in DK, when a promotor wants to stage a show, under the supervison of the Danish Pro Boxing Federation, the promotor has to put down a deposit to the DPBF. This way the fighters will get paid even if the promotor skips the country with the ticket money.
I would also assume that the fighters contract with the promotor states that either party can cancel the fight with X days/hours warning and pay X% of the agreed purse as a cancellation fee.
But both parties can of course choose to gamble and hope for the best, and not have anything in the contract about cancellation.

Enforcing the contract can of course be a problem. But nowadays, with SoMe, pubilcly shaming a contract-breaker should have the desired effect.

It's one of the pitfalls of the game and you have to be pragmatic. Small hall events without TV money almost always lose money. Managers are aware of this and do their best to mitigate costs. When an opponent drops out who do you expect to provide compensation ? the opponent who isn't getting paid at all or the promoter who is losing even more money ?
