Amir Khan Eyes Promotional Path; Plans to Stage Shows in UK Next Year

Amir Khan may be the latest boxing denizen to pass through the fighter-to-promoter revolving door.

Khan, the newly retired British boxing icon and former world titlist, intends on crossing over to the other side of the aisle and start promoting boxing cards. Khan, 35, announced his retirement earlier this month. His last bout was one of the biggest of his career, a long-awaited showdown with sworn rival and countryman Kell Brook, which Brook ended up winning by dominant sixth-round stoppage at Manchester Arena, in Manchester, England. Brook also announced his retirement from the sport earlier this month.

Asked recently to discuss his post-retirement plans, Khan, a native of Bolton, England, said he plans to stick around in boxing and operate on the business end as a “manager and promoter.” Khan, in fact, revealed he plans on putting on a slew of cards beginning next year in the United Kingdom.

“I don’t have the patience to be a trainer,” Khan said in an interview on The DAZN Boxing Show. “[But I want to be a] manager and promoter. I’m hopefully going to announce something in the next couple of weeks.

I’m going to do a massive couple of shows in the UK. It will be 10 shows next year in the UK. End of this year and next year. Promoting the up-and-coming younger fighters, man, giving them that chance, not making the mistakes I made in the sport of boxing. Opening new doors for them, you know?”

The former Olympic silver medalist also noted that he will be doing some “big things” in America as well, although he did not specifically state what they were. Khan said he is making a “massive” announcement in about a month in New York City.

“Also in America, big things over there,” Khan said. “I’m in New York in a month’s time announcing something massive over there, which I’m doing in America.”

Has links in the Middle East, well known in the UK and known by boxing fans in the US.

If he really wants to help the next generation, then that's fine.
He can do it.

Unless he enters the race with some BIG signings he will need deep pockets.

He has dabbled in Pakistan and Saudi … that might be worth another try.

Back then, Sky were open to everyone. Caldwell promoted shows on Sky too.

Boxxer etc will do well, because they have so much experience? Or because they have tv.

Even Barry Hearn struggled badly when he had a period without tv

ben shalom is a con man who was proven to be a liar about many of his business ventures prior to boxxer. but now with sky, he's a big shot. the platform makes a huge difference

obvioiusly, there are elements of platform, skill, and luck

Hatton was just like most of the other Sky promoters at the time. The occasional good fight/show but mostly shows headlined by a British title fight filled out with mismatches on the undercard. There will be exceptions to the rule but he really was no worse or better than most of the other U.K. promoters at the time with the exception being he paid over the odds for certain fights/fighters.

Yeah, didn't he spend a fortune on a British title fight involving Martin Murray?

I think he had a big show at The Velodrome with three European titles on.

He said recently he wanted to retire after the Canelo fight but couldn’t because he had no money. Yes, he’s had big paydays since but maybe he’s one of them who can’t learn.

A few days after the Brook fight he goes and gets a new Lambo probably costing 500k.

I can see Amir doing all over the country tours like big John Fury before he’s 40.

Khan has already admitted he has been fleeced out of millions over his career, as much as I admire him for wanting to stay involved i'd rather he saved his money to prevent the 'need' to ever fight again.

That was after the Canelo fight.

His wife has taken over the finances since then, She's done well for him.

I think some boxers after retirement, they want to stay linked with the sport. It's hard to leave for some.

Some will leave and not look back.

I would have expected him to focus on Dubai based events, doesn't he have high level contacts over there?
Surely that would be the perfect place to launch Glassjaw Promotions?

Hes got a profile, but I wouldn't let him anywhere near any young fighter as he would be car crash.

Fighters seem to think it’s easy to promote. In reality it’s very hard work, risky and very few make a success out of it.

Guys like Mick and Dennis Hobson probably haven’t made much money from boxing whilst the guys that have, like Frank, have still had problems (winding up companies, being shot etc).

If Khan is do this then he should just focus on shows in Dubai/Saudi where TV/bums on seats don’t mean as much.

Is there nobody around these people to give them a reality check?

Eddie Hearn was given a start by his dad but he has absolutely slaved his balls off to grow the business and it's still not easy. Eddie is on the road and the phone almost constantly. No way can Amir or similar compete with that without losing their shirt. Even trying to take a small chunk of the market will leave you short. It's a hard business to succeed in and he doesn't have the character or the brain for it.
