saw this term used to describe edgar berlanga's attempts to use it in a previous fight

and indeed so many fighters who try it fail miserably

who besides floyd was/is good at it?

George Benton/James Toney were good at it. Benton pretty much patented it.

Anthony Yarde is pretty bad at it but it doesn't stop him doing his Floyd impression.

from 2014 to 2017 or so he had a fun career, a lot of forums loved him. but then he stepped beyond his level and became a punchbag. vs the right opposition i enjoyed watching him though

It was the same last night. He fought a nobody again and finally scored the 1st round KO. Also, he bulked to 105 kg. However, hardly he'll face a decent HW, probably he'll take part in local freakshows in the nearest future.

Philly shell was coined as a term by the fight night games I think, it was just called the crab defence

George Foreman.

Foreman’s defence was more in the mould of Archie Moore’s cross arm defence. Frazier used a variant of it at times too.

Hopkins as boring as he could be at times used a decent Philly shell in his bag of tricks. He was very good at nullifying and drawing the sting out of opponents.

and making fights stinky

move around a bit, single pot shot. hold. whine about something. repeat. win a decision. that was most of post middle weight hopkins fights in a nutshell. i dont see how even purists could be entertained by that.

Ring mag even gave him a regular “tactics” spread where he would explain with photos how to tie someone up. It was even more boring than the letters page.
