In todays Evening Standard Eugene Maloney compares Matt Skelton to Sonny Liston and Rocky Marciano.

Didnt know Eugene had escaped from Broadmoor

Marciano was technically a lot better than Skelton, his punching technique was spot on. It's just that he had little defence and only one way of fighting, but it was enough.

The comparison makes mine between a certain recently deceased Philadelphian heavyweight and Chris Byrd appear uncanny.

Marciano and Liston are both stiffs. Is that what they meant?

Marciano had very underrated defence, he used to slip under shots and move in awkwardky without presenting too much of a target.

I know what you mean, but the fact he came forward all the time meant he caught a lot of shots. He wasn't quite a bob and weaver if you know what I mean, but the crouch made him hard to hit.

Can you imagine Marciano v Holyfield at cruiserweight, lord jesus!

but in undisputed heavyweight champion terms he is definately lower quartile

Just read the article, Skelton is only like Marciano & Liston when he adopts his streetfighting style.

Really, laugh's aside, to compare Skelton with either Marciano or Liston is both ludicrous in the extreme and deeply insulting to both the memories of two great warriors and to those boxing fans who still have more than two brain cells to rub together on a cold night!.
Liston was one of the most technically sound Heavyweights I've seen, great balance, good speed, great power and a jab that looked like it could take heads off... to compare him with Skelton is like comparing my 93 yearold neighbor with Cathrine Zeta-Jones.
Ok, Skelton is black, bald and old.... thats about it, as far as comparisons go with Liston go.

It was Frank who said it and they didn't compare Skelton to either Marciano or Liston, they said that Liston and Marciano were both brawlers and they both became World Champions and pretty decent ones.

I don't think anyone in the Skelton camp pretends that he is the greatest boxer in the world, but he'll always come to fight and the crowd loved it last night even if the purists didn't. He got the job done and he won the fight

What about Skelton against some of the old timers, ie. Jack Bodell or Danny McAlinden they would have been real brawls.

Liston wasn't a brawler though, he was a very good boxer with a great jab and good punch... to call him a brawler is to completely overlook his main talents and abilities. Marciano was a brawler in a real hard and intelligent manner... he was a great infighter basically.
Skelton is a mauler rather than an infighter... ne smothers much of his work and generally wins by tiring his limited and rather unfit opponents.
I've nothing against Skelton personally but when his team start comparing him to two of the most outstanding heavyweights of all time it is rather beyond a joke... Frwank should remember that there are some of us who have actually seen Marciano and Liston fight!.
