Found this article saying Darren was scared that frank would destroy him and his family if he quit boxing giving the signing on bonus.

Any boxing insiders here know what the deal was ?

Looked very shady from franks end. Haven’t heard anything good said about him from
The boxing business (bar bunce the shill after he turned himself into a woman).

I don’t think, from reading that article, that it sounds dodgy. Stupid of Frank to remortgage the house on a signing bonus but i got the impression from reading the article that Sutherland would worry about everything.

It’s such a shame as he seemed a really nice bloke and was an excellent prospect too. Perhaps if he’d been turning pro today it’d be easier for him to get the help he needed.

It sounds like he wanted out and everyone was trying to keep him in. Plus he invested a lot into it himself. I'd say he was definitely scared about the money but it wasnt worth his life, it could have been sorted out. He was in DCU University in Dublin doing some sports degree which I think he finished so he had that to fall back on. I wonder what happened with the money. Insurance paid out? It was a little dodgy from the reports how apparently his hands were bound when found. Who knows what really happened. You can speculate and come up with a few scenarios.

There was quite a bit on here after that article was published back in 2012, including, if I remember correctly, emotional responses from Frank (as Kellie was called then). They appear to have been deleted.

How could you hang yourself with your hands bound!

I had to take picture of the flat 3 days later. To make sure we had evidence of everything in the flat. But found out his dad had gone to the flat. The day earlier. Frank was still in hospital.
I had the keys to the flat. he had got someone to open it. His father took money. Medals and documentation without permission .

He may have assumed that Frank would have gone crazy if he’d pulled out of the fight and wanted some money back. I’d be surprised if that had been the case. It’s not going to foster a long term manager/promoter relationship if Frank is going to kick off and request the €90k back every time a fight may get postponed.

His trainer said if he wasn’t worrying about one thing then it’d be another so he clearly had real mental health problems.

I’d like to think that if the same thing happened now with a young boxer then they’d be more willing to accept help and it would be more readily available.

Might have been worried about frank keeping them ? Rather family have that.

Did he post on here? I think I remember actually talking to him on here but that may have been somewhere else.

Either way he was a sound lad and I was gutted when I found out he killers himself.

It is a tragedy that such a bright and thoughtful person as Darren died so young. He had a style that suited the pro game so much. That letter from his advisor doesn't read well, but it's hard to know the context in which it was written.

I used to have good chats with Darren after Saturday morning training sessions in the Ingle gym ( many years ago now). He was interested in people's plans for the future and always really considerate. Miss him.

Think its , very sad it happenned he was obviously a deep thinker and troubled in a way you cannot blame his parents for thinking /saying it was all dodgy , after all they must carry it in there hearts thinking why did'nt i spot it , why did;nt i stop it , and put the blame elswhere probably helps ,,
regards the money well off course he would be worried he accepted a lot of money a car ect ect to box for someone , and then did'nt want to do it doubt he would of invested the money and turned it into treple , quadruple that amount , otherwise he would'nt off been worried so he obviously spent it and was worried he could'nt pay it back , you can't blame Frank if he would off wanted his money back .

No think it was just an unfortunate end to a troubled young man , who was in a city alone way from his familly with deep problems , looking for someone too blame is not the thing too do

Spot on pal. I was involved on the scene at the time and met him and interviewed him but didn't know him personally. From from talking to people who did I think you're right. Behind the dazzling smile there was a lot of complexity.

I think the article was unfair on “Kellie” .. he thought a lot about Darren.

“Kellie” was a character when he was Frank, certainly NOT scary.

Yeah thought so. I spoke to him a few times and I remember him being grateful for encouragement and was eager to put everything into his boxing.

So sad.
