Journalists & The internet

Anyone else notice over the years that some journalists hated the website blokes who came to press conferences.

I remember one particular journalist that used to spit his toys out of the pram if a website bloke piped up and ask a question.

Whats worse I remember a journalist didnt like this forum too much because we ripped into him because his wife/girlfriend wasnt given a favourable seat and worst still the website blokes had good seats.

Whilst at Fight Academy I must confess deliberately winding up the bloke.

Anyone have a favourite boxing journalist?

I'll put my cards firmly on the table, as while I'll always hold the likes of Harry Mullan and Hugh Mcllvanney in huge regard, I think it's easy to overlook the fact we genuinely have some modern greats operating right now.

Matt Christie has already cemented his legacy as the best editor in Boxing News' history whatever happens from here iMO.

Tris Dixon is another who has built a phenomenal body of work that constitutes 'hall of fame' territory.

Steve Bunce... don't think I've ever been more conflicted over someone. Comes across terribly as a person, but as a writer I love his pieces in BN, the latest on the Haringey Box Cup being a perfect example. He clearly loves boxing and has wonderful knowledge and experience, but then presses the self-destruct button by being so needlessly thin-skinned, arrogant and condescending. So admire him greatly as a journo, less so as a man.

Terry Dooley (AKA he who should not be named) - The Julian Assange of Boxrec! Great writer who was always a great contributor on here. It's a poorer place without him and I still don't understand why he's not been allowed back.

Donald McRae - Consistently excellent IMO.

Honorable mentions - John Dennen, Elliot Worsell.

The boxing news journalists have always been excellent, I guess you have to be a lover of the game to pretty much be working for free.

Most people have a love hate relationship with Bunce and both the love and the hate are usually deserved. Nevertheless I think he is great for the game, and esp when he was with setanta, he was essentially left in a studio for a couple of hours to ad lib, and he thrived.

I have never thought much of Gareth Davies, Ron Lewis, Jeff Powell and Colin Hart

well, there's a question, who's yours?

I mean apart from the usual naming-no-names, 'you show me yours but I won't show you mine' classic one-sidedness of the way you pose the thread, how about actually offering something beyond innuendo, *taps nose* etc

Yes, Bob is a great. He once responded to me on here many years ago when he was being discussed. I asked: "Out of interest, is he any relation to Sarah-Jane Mee on Sky? I think she is stunning and obviously as sharp as a tack."

He came back with: "Look, sorry, but that's no way to talk about my mum."

So I was still none the wiser. I've missed the boat with her though, she's married now and has at least one child. :verysad:

P.s. And I am happy in my relationship.

For god sake give it a rest. You are getting truly pathetic.

I thought of the thread title and as with most of the threads I contribute, to keep a debate/discussion going. Out of many criticisms which can be directed my way, my contribution and commitment are beyond reproach.

You mention *tap nose* I notice you cowardly hide behind your user name. Yet you do not stop your personal attacks.

Most of my favourites are from the internet.

Top of the tree goes Elliot Worsell who started at Eastside Boxing.

I think Terry Dooley is extremely good too.

I also think Ben Carey (Lightsoot) was outstanding on the net, and could have made it as a journo.

David Payne was very good, but he also had the knack of easily winding me up

Out of the newspapers I like Steve Bunce his commitment to the sport is second to none. He also did a lot to promote the emergence of boxing on the internet.

I like Steve Lillis too.

By far the worst out of the newspaper journos is Pat Sheehan.

I do not like Jeff Powell cant put my finger on it, just dont like him.

I also dont like Colin Hart who reverts to the past whenever discussing boxing as if the present or future will never match the glorious past

It’s pretty flabbergasting that Terry is still banned from here.

Bob Mee was excellent, anyone know how he’s doing these days? I read he’d had some health issues.

It would be wrong not to mention Andy Whittle who travels wherever in the UK covering any show not just the glamorous ones.

The big difference between the Internet and newspaper journos was and still is COMMITMENT…

Lost count the amount of shows I was working on with not 1 journo being present.

In Naz's pomp Sheehan wrote an article that the Prince was in talks to fight the P4P number 1 Roy 'Junior' Jones, mixing him up with super bantam Barrera conqueror Junior Jones. FFS.

Spud always has to let people know that he knows something they don't.

Tedious character.

Working on building sites a lot of the guys would get their boxing opinions from the S*n. They were mostly shit but always written by Colin 'back in my day things were so much better' Hart

The only thing better about boxing now than pre-2000 is 4k digital res filming.

I only just found out that Colin Hart is in fact Jewish and thus has most likely been circumcised

Shame that, I always had him down as a complete prick

It was extremely frustrating at the time the forums and boxing websites had every man and his dog visiting them, yet struggled to be accepted by the promoters.

At eastside & doghouse we had lads working their nuts off for free, the only incentive a free ticket in.

So, whilst I understand certain shows were not very exciting it was mine and Bens view to try our best to have someone reporting on the show.

Ben Carey was a bloody brilliant editor, he was often up late at night editing articles and making sure they were up on the website in a timely fashion.

The hardist working journalist by far was Steve Bunce. He is quite simply obsessed by the sport.

I always enjoy Thomas Hauser 's articles in Boxing News, very evocative of big fights. As previously mentioned, Bunce' s articles are often a real joy.

If you think those names are great writers you should consider reading more widely.

Thanks for the patronising comment but I'm perfectly comfortable with those names and my own capacity to judge them.
In terms of your own accuracy you need to consider reading the question again, which clearly referred to them as journalists rather than writers. Unless, of course, you don't understand the distinction.
