Best British Champs.

Fighters who went no higher than this title but were still superb fighters.

As Bennie mentioned on another thread, Kevin Finnegan must be a contender.

John Simpson is another who put in some great performances at British level.

John Simpson is genuinely one of my favourite fighters ever, I think.

Hard as nails. The recipient of some seriously dodgy scorecards.

John Murray, and John Thaxton had some good fights for this title, I think they may have scaled european level though.

I agree

When you look at a record like his and you see quite a few draws away from home then you know what happened

Corrr Michael Gomez!that scrap with Arthur was wild. I was sad when Gomez was beaten by Khan. He was a brilliant watch. I am gutted his film never came out.

Finnegan also won the Euro middleweight belt, if I remember correctly, and lost it to Matteo Salvemini. Who lost it almost immediately to Tony Sibson and was never shyte after

Great thread!
Nice one Tommo :salut:
I couldn't stomach the worst British champs thread because some of the best fights I've ever seen have been for that strap.

Anyways, my vote is for Frank Buglioni and his run of Burton/Summers/Richards which were cracking LHW fights that all went 12 rounds of action. The 12th round stoppage of Burton was edge of the seat stuff, and Summers could have gone either way. Then Callum Johnson put an end to it by brutally stopping Frank in the first round.
But for a time, Frank took all comers and was the undisputed British LHW, and for that we salut him :salut:

Edit: I just checked Frank's record, Didn't realise he held the European for one fight, I thought he just failed at a title shot against Chuninov and went back to the domestic circuit

Prince Rodney was an excellent British champion. He won the title against Jimmy Batten in London, relinquished it, won it back from Jimmy Cable and then made the Lonsdale Belt his own property with a gut-wrenching win over Mick Courtney, with the weight-weakened Rodney out on his feet in the closing stages.

Always thought Rodney was a damn good fighter. Fought all the best at the time from Graham to Pyatt. Should never have made the comeback in the late eighties though

Danny Williams. He did have the Tyson win and challenge for the WBC but didn't win a higher belt, plus he won the Lonsdale outright. Let's ignore the end of career journeyman phase...

Such a frustrating fighter to support back then. Had these absolutely electric bursts of world class speed and power, followed by, inevitably, not very much, and often in the same fight. Sometimes seems inexplicable considering his deep well of courage, but even in his pomp he had big flaws as well - slow feet and a slightly soft chin - and those are not easy things to ignore when you're trying to compete with the best big men in the world.

i don't think the wbo european title is the euro title people mean in this thread , it's worth less than a british title easily and is way easier to win generally, hence why it was the first belt bugs fought for rather than the british. no one is credibly referred to as being the former euro champ unless they had the ebu title

bugs had a nice run that aged well, but i think there were a lot of british champs falling into this category better than him

Easy choice for me....Michael Ayres :salut:

I don't count spurious titles like IBO, so Ayres won the Lonsdale belt in record time and defended the British title against Colin Dunne in the best British title fight I've seen :box:

Barry Hearn ultimately fucked up his career, but at his peak one of the best England has produced.
