Yeah, he isn't quite there. From his own time, Eddie Mustapha Muhammad is more deserving.

No. He had the talent and was a classy boxer, but his career fell far short unfortunately.

If they had stopped the fight with Matthew Saad Muhammad who had a terrible cut I think John could have made the HoF.

...but John apparently had talent to burn, was a big personality and was winning world belts before the dreaded 'title inflation' took hold. That should be considered I suppose.

The IBHOF does the emotional and the nostalgic - it's a hall of fame business when push comes to shove - but I think John falls a tad short myself. Just missing a win of note or two.

The light heavyweight division was loaded around this time. This hurt his chances because he doesn't stand out.

Victor Galindez, Mathew Saad Muhammad and Dwight Qawi have been in for a long time.
Eddie Mustapha Muhammad should have been 20 years ago, but apparently isn't even on the ballot.
You could also make a case for Marvin Johnson who is not in.
