WBA starts a new era in Europe

The World Boxing Association, through its Championships Committee, approved the project of its WBA Europe regional office to promote the “WBA Continental Europe” belt, which will launch a new era of the pioneer organization in the Old Continent.

The proposal, presented by the director of WBA Europe, Mariana Borisova, will offer new opportunities to the fighters who make life in that continent, also giving a new dimension to the body in the strategic region.

“I am confident that with the approval of this new project, the WBA will be stronger and more powerful in Europe,” Borisova assured.

The “WBA Continental Europe” belt confirms the importance of the region in the strategic objectives of the World Boxing Association. It is also a recognition by the WBA of the consistent and extraordinary work done by its regional office.

“WBA Europe has been doing a tremendous job, thanks to which WBA’s growth in the region has been remarkable. Now we aspire to go to another level, opening this new opportunity to European boxers within our organization,” said WBA President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza.

“The “WBA Continental Europe” belt project is a reality and has the full recognition of our organization. I am sure that with the impetus of Mariana Borisova and her entire team, this project will achieve its objectives, for the benefit of boxing and the many talents that are emerging in the region today. We are very excited about this new challenge that is opening up before us,” she added.

Borisova indicated that this new era of the WBA in Europe will begin in September, with the organization of bouts of the highest standard and top quality boxers.

WBA Europe has had a tremendous penetration in its area of influence and its objective is to continue growing, giving opportunities and prestige to qualified fighters and champions in the region.

So only fighters who "make life" in Continental Europe can fight for it. So anyone living on an island can't, so no British, Irish, Sardinian, Maltese etc.

That apart, ugh - another belt we just don't need. Appropriately "New era in Europe" is an anagram of "European wiener".

I’d like the WBA to eff off from boxing.

Didn't they have a EBA title and it was really poor, with dodgy mismatches?

Interesting that the WBA who have often claimed they want to reduce the number of their belts looked at the current situation and thought: “you know what boxing really needs right now is another belt.”

Surely fighters who "make life" by knocking up a local on holiday in Europe also qualify

WBA are just striving to be the shittest sanctioning body in the world. and its not easy.

-WBC- there heavyweight champ is retired... there heavyweight number 1 hasnt won in nearly 3 years... They made bridgerweight...

-WBO- Frank warrens bitch in the UK. Irrelevent in the US.

-IBF-the forgoten belt... breif stint of relevence when it was spences only belt. but back to being an afterthought. Probably best organisation but still madness like ortiz being top ranked... and hrg 2nd... when neither have beat anyone decent.

-IBO-domestic southafrican leauge for "world champs".

But WBA is still undisputed. Its really hard to compete with the absurdity of the Regualr belt. not to mention there ability to place number 500 in the world into 15th spot on there rankings if Don kings boy needs an easy touch....

…Interim title matches

There are some interesting times ahead with the WBA. They’ve, finally, done the right thing in reducing the amount of interim champs and removing, in the bulk of divisions, the super champ.

However the ABC is the US is reviewing claims of bribes for rankings. Essentially managers/promoters have been paying a company that has very close ties to the WBA and have then had their fighters ranked.

It was the ABC who threatened to stop recognising WBA fights in the US because of the various titles that caused them to do something. This is clearly blatant corruption so I can’t see how the ABC won’t do something about it. If no WBA title fights in the US, then does the WBA continue to exist without the big commissions?

This organisation needs to be shut down due to corruption, it should have happened 10 years ago.

Promoters also must share the blame giving it legitimacy. Sadly until the Americans such as the FBI etc take interest things will continue on.

This. They almost encapsulate what's wrong with boxing, at least administratively.

Good news. Nothing bad can come from fringe worthless belts.
