He's obviously not smart enough to have intentionally made the right decision, but I think he played his cards right. Beating Figueroa really would've meant nothing, and since Broner is gun-shy with little to no power post-135, it would've been a dull and boring fight with Figueroa.

Say what you want about the fight not meaning anything but Broner would have clearly demolished Figueroa last night and get credit for retiring him. Instead, Lips is now in line for a big payday as a result of the win which could have been Broner’s elevated status. Lips taking this fight with 5 days notice just saved his career which was all but done. Hence, the reason he’s the boxer on standby fights like this. Its a clear reversal of fortune situation.

The stands tell me that no one cares about Figueroa. The only promotion for this fight I saw was Broner complaining that the press conference was done through Zoom. Broner seemed like he was trying to protect his drawing power here more than trying to elevate his rankings, hence he dropped out. Something tells me they anticipated this and had Lipinets on standby... or they always were going to pit the winner against Lipinets.

I don't think it was anything other than Broner being brash with his dwindling star power that is almost non-existant. The atmosphere reminded me of those old Showbox: The Next Generation cards.

That’s a pretty ridiculous premise if I must say so. This fight was being televised to millions around the world. These guys care not about ticket sales at small venues. This was a main event fight advertised way more successfully than it should have. And I guarantee that many asses decided to go elsewhere than their seats once Lipinets was penciled in the slot instead of Broner.

Broner has consistently shot himself in the foot at every turn in his career. I’m afraid that he’s run out bullets this time bc I really do think that he would have definitely set himself up for a very big fight had he followed through here and garnered the not too much contested win. I’ve always loved Omar’s fights so I don’t mean to piss on he or his career. But boxers and their trainers don’t just come up with the retirement option after a bad loss. They knew this was Fig’s last fight well before it was called.
