Best amateur to turn pro but achieve nothing as a pro.

Post by gregregegg »

Egor Mekhontsevs has amazing amature credentials, Then turned pro at 28, retired at 32 undefeated but having done nothing as a pro.

His amature resume included...

-Russo (2 time world am champ, 2 time olympic silver medalist)
-Usyk (olympic champ, am world champ, pro undisputed cruiser, pro unified heavyweight)
-Acosta (olympic bronze medlist, World am champs runner up)
-trev pulev (olympic bronze medalist)
- Tishchenko (olympic gold medalist and world am champ)
-Julio Cesar la Cruz (2x olympic gold, 5+ world am champ)
-Oleksandr Gvozdyk (olympic bronze medalist, pro world champ)
-Niyazymbetov (2 x olympic silver medalist, 2x wolrd am champs silver medalist).

In doing so He has won a world champs, and an Olympic gold.

Can anyone think of a simularl instance of a high levle amature turning pro but just having a nothing carrer(especialy someone that turned pro with time, and retired undefeated, and at a decent weight)....

P.s Did something happen to him and i just cant find it on the internet?

Peter Lesov of Bulgaria is worth a mention, along with Africans Sulley Shittu and Philip Waruinge.

1960s-70s heavyweight Nick Wells is an example of what you're talking about. Wells was one of the nation's top amateurs, but didn't have much of a pro career.

There are many similar examples.

peter lesov hard to beat for this

wtf happened to him as a pro? even accounting for the differences between the ams and pros, surely someone that good as an am could manage better than 1-5 with 5 ko losses

guys like korobov and campbell didnt match their amateur levels, but at least both were contenders in the pros. poor lesov was just a punching bag.

How do you compare the experiences of other boxers like Korobov and Campbell, who also didn't reach their amateur levels in the pros but managed to become contenders, to Lesov's situation?

That's a name from the past. I'm pretty sure he won the AAU nationals back in the 70's and the Golden Gloves. His biggest claim to fame is that he missed the flight to New York to meet the US team that crashed on the way to Poland in 1980. Marvis Frazier was the 1st pick for that slot but Joe didn't let him go and then Jimmy was offered the place on the team. He fought a lot of big names in the amateurs including Teofilo Stevenson like 3 times.
