MATEUSZ MASTERNAK-JASON WHATELEY SET FOR OCTOBER 29 IN POLAND

News reached The Ring on Wednesday that experienced Polish fighter Mateusz Masternak will face unbeaten Jason Whateley in an IBF cruiserweight title eliminator at Nosalowy Dwór in Zakopane, Poland on October 29.

The winner will become mandatory challenger to The Ring and IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia. However, the Australian is still recovering from a broken jaw he suffered in his title win over Mairis Briedis in July. He could be out for several more months and there’s the possibility of a direct rematch with Briedis.

In the meantime, Masternak and Whateley will look to secure their position in the IBF rankings.

Masternak, who is rated No. 8 by The Ring at 200 pounds, turned professional in 2006. He won the European championship by outboxing Juho Haapoja (UD 12) but lost it in his first defense to Grigory Drozd (TKO 11). Closes losses to Youri Kalenga (SD 12) and Johnny Muller (SD 10) bookended a win over former unified cruiserweight titleholder Jean-Marc Mormeck (SD 10). The 35-year-old Masternak boxed well but lost to Tony Bellew (UD 12) in December 2015. He bounced back with five wins, including a rematch victory over Kalenga (TKO 6); lost a close fight to Yuniel Dorticos (UD 12) and has won five fights since.

Whateley represented Australia at the 2016 Olympics and won silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. After turning professional, he won national and IBF regional titles. The 31-year-old hasn’t beaten anyone of note and Masternak is a serious step up in class.

Masternak and Whateley collide Saturday

IBF #10 cruiserweight Jason Whateley (10-0, 9 KOs) will clash with IBF #5 Mateusz Masternak (45-6, 31 KOs) over twelve rounds in an IBF elimination bout for the IBF #1 cruiserweight position on Saturday at the Nosalowy Dwór Resort & Spa in Zakopane, Poland.

“I think it will be an action-packed fight,” said Whateley. “He’s not a massive puncher but his workrate seems to overwhelm his opponents. I’ve got to make sure that I’m extremely fit for it. I think that’s his strength – he comes in pretty fit and he has a good workrate for the entire fight. That’s something that we’re going to be wary of and we’ll be prepared for it. That’s what I got into the sport for, big fights like this.”

the knockdown call was as bogus as it gets, but still a clear lopsided win for masternak. whateley was in most of the rounds and made him work hard, but master almost always sharper and scoring better

master will beat nearly everyone who isnt world class, but struggles to win when he fights legit world level opposition
