Who wins between John Wayne's grandson vs the first Latin fighter to win a world heavyweight title?
I probably would pick Tommy "The Duke" Morrison by knockout.

I gotta imagine The Duke gets him at some point. Ruiz might make it ugly enough to survive a few rounds there, but I think Tommy had quick enough hands, and an explosive enough inside game that he'd ultimately take out Ruiz.

Morrison would repeat the Tua stuff on the Hugging Man, not necessarily the same fast, but it would be an early KO by Tommy.

The Duke would knock out the Hugging Man in 5 rounds with a big left hook.

The Tua fight was before the Hugging style was implemented.
I give Ruiz a chance if he can jab jab hug hug jab while avoiding contact with Morrison.
But the likely outcome is Morrison by KO in the mid to late rounds

surprise the consensus is that ruiz is getting ko'd , aside from the tua fight he was always durable and a hell of a spoiler. tommy had more offensive tools obviously, but most of his kos were over cans or well faded opposition. i think ruiz could give him some problems with the ugly stuff, especially later. i'd go for tommy to have a big first half, maybe score a kd, then fade but still hold on for a decision

I always was a fan of John Ruiz even if his style stinks because the man seemingly was willing to fight anybody and he was better than his style let on because he did have a very sneaky overhand right and he did have pretty good hand speed.
I think if he survived an early onslaught from Tommy Morrison he would basically have the potential to pull off an upset. While John Ruiz was consistently boring he was at least consistent the same cannot be said of Tommy Morrison's performances.
The man did get a win over Andrew Golota, Hasim Rahman, and in my personal opinion he was robbed twice against Nicolai Valuev. I don't think John Ruiz would just be this big pushover for Tommy Morrison. One thing people have to remember is that Tommy Morrison did not have the best cardio, while John Ruiz never seem to have a problem going 12 rounds.

I thought Golota got jobbed against Ruiz personally.
You're right though that dull as he was Ruiz did actually wind up putting together a reasonably respectable resume. Beating Rahman, Holyfield, Fres Oquendo. Most of his fights were ugly as ugly gets, but he was a weirdly effective guy.
The Golota fight I actually enjoyed for a few reasons. Mainly his cornermen got kicked out of the corner for arguing with the referee, and it was f*cking hilarious

Norman "Stoney" Stone was hilarious. Interviewed him once or twice back when I did podcasts on ATGRADIO.

It's weird how some people just gloss over Morrison getting stuffed by Bentt, as if it was some kind of fluke. Michael was a very good amateur and he beat Morrison fair and square.

It was a fluke. Morrison jumped face first on the wobbled Bentt, the best present you can do to your opponent. It was a classical example of a lucky punch.
Bentt could be an accomplished amateur, but this can mean nothing in the pros. There's quite an amount of similar examples. Bentt doesn't have any other win of note. He was outclassed and destroyed by Herbie Hide.
