Evander Holyfield

I know he has been banned from fighting in USA, but does this make him officially retired.

Will he resurface in any other country? Even though he can't win any more, there's no telling Evander that.

It'd be relatively easy to sign up a fight with Danny Williams in UK, one of the Klitschkos in Europe, Tyson fights a lot outside of the USA now, and Tua not being a US citizen might be a fight he could make outside the USA relatively easy.

I'm not saying he'd beat any of these people, but the real question is, is Evander Holyfield not fighting in the USA officially making him retire? Or can he still delude himself that he might win a world title?

No Holyfield has not officially retired

It's a possibility, but a lot would depend on each individual countrys Boxing authorities granting Holyfield a license to box in their country.

In my opinion it is highly unlikely the UK or Germany would allow Holyfield to box in their countys. Thats just my opinion though.

I am sure there will be some bloodsucking promoter somewhere in some far away place willing to make some blood money out of this proud but faded warrior.

To tell you the truth, I do not want this one time GREAT WARRIOR to ever put on the gloves again for a prize fight. He could barely speak well now, and he does not have the punches, nor reflexes nor the speed anymore.

He should have called it quits after the first Lennox Lewis fight in March 1999. 5 or 6 years earlier, Evander would have beaten him.

Watched Holyfield - Adilson Rodriguez just yesterday. Excellent fight for a young, fit and healthy Holyfield making his way up the HW ladder :TU:

Holyfield really did blast Adilson Rodriguez out of there that night. Rodriguez at the time was being trained by Angelo Dundee whom was quoted before the fight as saying "My guy is so tough you could hit him with a baseball bat and he wont go down".

Holyfields fists proved him very wrong.

I've been trying to upload it to yousendit.com but it keeps cutting out. Will keep trying, a few around here would never have seen how good Holy really was at his best. He looks like a lightheavy in this fight :D

I think Foreman KO'd Rodriguez at a later stage, too

You are quite correct, about a year later Big George also KO'd Rodriguez in two rounds.

Talking of Adilson Rodriguez, just before the Tyson v Douglas fight there was a lot of serious talk of a Tyson V Rodriguez fight. I seem to recall that Rodriguez as highly rated by the governing bodies at the time.

He was highly rated although his opposition was less than stellar (who said Francesco Damiani?)

Why was he banned from fighting in the U.S.?

Because of his performance in the Donald fight. I think the the New York State commission that suspended his license, and most other state commissions honor that decision. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...

I don't think anyone is saying that it is a good idea. Its just I was wondering if he has finally realised that or not.

Can't understand how his trainers can look at themselves in the mirror. What do they tell him? "well, you're 60% of the fighter you once were but shit, who cares"?

Seems he won't listen to his family or anybody else for that matter - is everyone wrong?

He is a warrior. That is him to the core. You have to kill a gladiator to keep them from fighting. If he keeps fighting he will kill himself. He is my favorite of all time, but he should have never fought past the Tyson fight. That should have been it for him.

I think it's a bizarre (although a good one) decision! :-?

Surely if Holyfield wants to fight, as long as he is medically fit to do so, he should be able to. Personally I don't want him to continue, but he's a 42 year old man, he can make his own decisions.

Maybe he is quite happy to be a 'bum' now, just picking up small purses & furthering the careers of up & coming HW's! Where would boxing be without it's bums?

Adilson Rodriguez was a solid contender back in the day. Good size & skills, respectable power. Had a long list of wins over the Usual Suspects american trial horses that everyone else was plowing through, and lets not forget a 10 rd decision over Bonecrusher Smith right after Tyson beat him.

He got iced by Foreman & Holyfield but at that time both guys could PUNCH!

"Maguila" Rodrigues was the only South American heavy who gained contender status since the 80s (I can only think of Bernardo Mercado from that decade).

Dont forget also that after those devastating losses to Foreman and Holyfield he went on to fight for 10 more years (snatching the "prestigious" WBF title from Johnny Nelson, when Maguila was 37 yrs old).

Also, Bonecrusher was batlantly robbed against the brazilian, if i recall correctly one judge had Smith up by a wide margin and the others had many even rounds. Needless to say the fight took place in Maguila's native Sao Paulo. I think the only other american present at the venue was the judge who had Bonecrusher winning.

As far as I know all the other trial horse wins for him were legitimate and his list of victims is almost a carbon copy of Tyson and Foreman's opponents in the 80s. (Rouse, Scaff. Jameson, Sekorski, Jaco, Boyd, Tillis, etc...

I read that Nelson got robbed in that fight, but I have never seen it myself, has anyone here?

Wasn't that the fight that was held outdoors and towards the end of the fight it started to rain and the judges scorecards got wet and smudged? I'm sure it was that fight.

The last I heard about Rodrigues was about 5/6 years ago when he got shot in the foot during an argument with a traffic cop.

Holy was a great warrior,

but now he is not even a top 20 anymore. It is impossible to win a title, so the only reason he wants to fight is because he cant let go of this sport.

Right now he is discussing some fight in Europe agaisnt B level Euro fighter. His next foe is supposed to be Andreas Sidon. I reckon he can still beat these guys but it is really pushing the limits because some of these guys can punch and hurt the old man.

I hope he can retire with a few victories.
He apporache Vital ifor a fight but was turned down. Any champ that gives him a shot and ends up hurting the old warrior will be hated for it. So perhaps none of them will give him any more shots.

When is going to retire? Maybe only after a few wins agaisnt Euro trial horses.
