Joshua Franco-Kazuto Ioka Rematch Set; Ioka To Vacate WBO Title

Kazuto Ioka is prepared to abandon one title to chase another.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that Ioka—Japan’s only-ever male four-division titlist—will move forward with a desired rematch with San Antonio’s Joshua Franco. The two met in a WBA/WBO junior bantamweight title unification bout which ended in a draw last New Year’s Eve in Tokyo. The rematch will only come with Franco’s WBA title at stake, as Ioka is required to relinquish his WBO title in lieu of an ordered mandatory title defense versus countryman Junto Nakatani.

The Ioka-Franco rematch—which was first reported by Yahoo! Japan—is eyed for June at a location to be determined in Japan. The development comes immediately after the WBO ordered a purse bid hearing when Ioka and Nakatani failed to reach terms for their title fight which was ordered on January 9.

The ordered mandatory title fight didn’t come as a surprise, given the resolution reached during WBO’s annual convention last October which called for the winner of Ioka's approved WBA/WBO unification clash with Joshua Franco to face Nakatani within 180 days. Ioka and Franco fought to a twelve-round draw in their spirited New Year’s Eve clash in Tokyo, with the competitive nature of the fight creating high demand for a rematch.

Ioka was apparently more interested in settling past business rather than having to honor what would have been his fifth ordered mandatory title defense since winning the title in a June 2019 tenth-round knockout of Aston Palicte. The 33-year-old Osaka native—now based out of Tokyo—was since ordered to face Jeyvier Cintron, Kosei Tanaka, Francisco Rodriguez Jr. and Donnie Nietes in mandatory title defenses.

Two optional defenses were permitted in between the run: a twelve-round win over Ryoji Fukunaga, who replaced then-IBF junior bantamweight titlist Jerwin Ancajas in a scrapped New Year’s Eve 2021 unification bout due to late-emerging Covid restrictions in Japan; and the aforementioned draw with Franco (18-1-3, 8 KOs). Moving forward with the Franco rematch was not possible without abdicating his WBO title reign, as the sanctioning body was prepared to strip Ioka of the title for failure to comply with the mandatory order.

As previously reported by BS.com, Ioka-Nakatani talks gained little traction. Ioka’s side already secured the Franco rematch before the WBO called for a purse bid hearing, which was due to take place February 28 at sanctioning body headquarters in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Franco will attempt his second defense as a full WBA titlist. The San Antonio native previously held the secondary WBA ‘Regular’ 115-pound title, receiving a status upgrade after Juan Francisco Estrada (44-3, 28 KOs) was stripped of the WBA ‘Super’ belt for failure to honor their ordered title consolidation clash.

A rematch with Ioka will count towards Franco’s one permitted voluntary title defense while the WBA figures out the mandatory challenger title status.

Nakatani (24-0, 18 KOs) will await further instructions on who he will face for the vacant WBO 115-pound title. The unbeaten 24-year-old southpaw from Sagamihara, Japan relinquished his WBO flyweight title in exchange for a number-one ranking at junior bantamweight.

The process calls for the WBO to make available the fight to the next highest ranked challenger. Australia’s Andrew Moloney is ranked one spot below Nakatani and is a strong candidate to land the fight. The former secondary WBA 115-pound titlist was previously in talks with Mexico’s Pedro Guevara for an assigned WBC title eliminator, though both parties have been stuck for weeks in a holding pattern while awaiting further instructions.

Ioka has won titles at strawweight, junior flyweight, flyweight and junior bantamweight. A win over Franco would have added to his already historic career as Japan’s only fighter to unify titles in two weight divisions, having previously accomplished the feat at strawweight.

That is no longer on the table, as he will now enter as the challenger for his rematch with Franco.

Joshua Franco vs Kazuto Ioka 2 reportedly set for June 24th in Tokyo

While Juan Francisco Estrada is still out of the picture for the moment, the super flyweight division is slowly grinding back into motion. Dan Rafael reports that WBA champion Joshua Franco will rematch Kazuto Ioka on June 24th in Tokyo.

Their first meeting was a unification match that saw Franco (18-1-3, 8 KO) outland Ioka (29-2-1, 15 KO) over 12 competitive rounds, only to walk away with a majority draw. Ioka then got the order to defend his title against mandatory challenger Junto Nakatani, a former flyweight titlist, but ultimately elected to vacate and pursue another bout with Franco.

Nakatani will face Andrew Moloney for the vacant belt on the ESPN portion of Devin Haney vs Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Props to both men, honestly, Franco for heading back to hostile territory and Ioka for willingly giving up his title to retry a matchup he struggled with. Looking forward to this one.

Ioka On Franco Rematch: "The Plan Is To Win By Knockout, Want To Win More Clearly This Time"

"The plan is to win by knockout,” Ioka told local reporters at the start of fight week.

“I want to win more clearly this time around,” insisted Ioka.

Joshua Franco Still Over 115-Pound Limit, WBA Title At Stake Only For Kazuto Ioka In Rematch

Joshua Franco and Kazuto Ioka both entered their first fight as reigning junior bantamweight titlist.

They will now enter the ring for their anticipated sequel as former titleholders.

San Antonio’s Franco was forced to relinquish the WBA 115-pound title after failing to make weight for Saturday’s rematch versus Ioka. The bout will still proceed, with only Ioka eligible to win the now vacant title atop an Abema TV Pay-Per-View event this Saturday from Ota-City General Gymnasium in Tokyo.

The official pre-fight weigh-in saw Franco (18-1-3, 8KOs) tip the scales at 55.2 kilograms—roughly 121.7 pounds, which is nearly two full divisions above the 115-pound limit. He was granted two hours to lose as much weight as possible, per a fight week agreement reached between the respective teams. However, Franco’s body had already shut down as he was only able to get down to 121 ¼ pounds (55 kilograms).

Ioka was well under the limit on the first attempt, as the Osaka-born boxer—now based out of Tokyo—was 52 kilograms (roughly 114.6 pounds).

Franco and his team were apologetic throughout Friday’s weigh-in and appreciative of the opportunity to proceed with this weekend’s rematch.

“There was some issues the past few days that even up to a few hours ago made us believe the fight was off,” Robert Garcia, Franco’s longtime trainer, told BS.com after the weigh-in. “Josh has always been a professional and has never had a problem like this before. We had been in communication with the promoter for a few days on how to keep the fight on. This was all agreed to prior to the weigh-in. We have nothing but respect for Ioka, his team and his promoter.”

Their first fight took place last December 31 at the same venue and ended in a twelve-round, majority draw. Franco entered as the recently upgraded full WBA junior bantamweight titlist, while Ioka—who initially missed weight last December before hitting the mark on the second attempt—made the sixth defense of his WBO title in their attempted unification bout.

Franco-Ioka I was permitted to move forward on the condition that the winner—or Ioka in the event of a draw or No-Contest—next face then-mandatory challenger Junto Nakatani. The WBO stuck to its guns and ordered the fight, only for Ioka to vacate the title after having already agreed to a rematch versus Franco.

To his credit, Ioka took Friday’s weigh-in snafu in stride.

“I’ve come this far… I’m in the best condition right now,” Ioka said during the post weigh-in press conference. “I have no hard feelings, no resentment towards my opponent.”

A win on Saturday will see Ioka (29-2-1, 15KOs) become a six-time titleholder in four weight divisions and a two-time junior bantamweight titlist. Any other outcome will result in the WBA title remaining vacant.

Franco’s team admitted uncertainty during fight week as to whether the fight would proceed.

Confusion lingered when the Japanese Boxing Commission (JBC) raised the issue that a drug testing sample provided by Ioka from last December 31 revealed trace amounts of cannabis. The amount was well under the threshold of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), though Ioka’s team challenged the finding outright and denied any wrongdoing.

A similar development occurred in 2021, though Ioka’s team was able to prove contamination.

Nevertheless, it was a troubling week for the visiting Franco who was unsure until a couple of days ago if there was still a fight this weekend.

“It’s been a tough week,” Franco admitted to the assembled media on Friday. “There was a point when we thought the fight wasn’t going to happen. Both teams came to an agreement. We’re going to continue the fight. Everything is good.

“I felt good. I’m happy and I’m ready to go.”

Franco previously held the WBA ‘Regular’ title, which was upgraded last summer after Juan Francisco Estrada was stripped of the ‘Super’ belt for failure to honor an ordered title consolidation bout. The lone successful defense of Franco’s full reign was in the draw versus Ioka.

Ioka previously held the WBO 115-pound title dating back to a June 2019 knockout win over Aston Palicte. The historic feat saw Ioka become Japan’s first-ever male boxer to win titles in four weight divisions after having reigned at strawweight, junior flyweight and flyweight.
