Carlos Adames vs. Julian Williams | Showtime - June 24, 2023

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Alberto Puello vs Rolando Romero set for May 13, Carlos Adames vs Julian Williams for June 24 on Showtime

Other fights include the return of Gary Antuanne Russell, Erickson Lubin vs Luis Arias, and Fernando Martinez vs Jade Bornea

Showtime’s latest schedule update includes a slightly delayed title fight and a brand-new tripleheader. Alberto Puello’s previously revealed 140-lb title defense against Rolando Romero will now land on May 13th, while Carlos Adames vs Julian Williams leads a June 24th show at The Armory in Minneapolis.

There’s still no telling when Jermall Charlo will return to action, so Adames (22-1, 17 KO) will defend his interim WBC middleweight title against Williams (28-3-1, 16 KO). “J-Rock” has fought just once since suffering consecutive losses to Jeison Rosario and Vladimir Hernandez, a unanimous decision over Argentine journeyman Rolando Wenceslao Mansilla in November.

We’ve seen Williams flip the script before, but moving up to challenge a genuinely lethal 160-pounder seems like a tall task.

That card will also see Erickson Lubin (24-2, 17 KO) look to bounce back against the hot-and-cold Luis Arias (20-3-1, 9 KO) and Fernando Martinez (15-0, 8 KO) defend his IBF super flyweight title against mandatory challenger Jade Bornea (18-0, 12 KO).

Press Release

WBC interim middleweight champion Carlos Adames will defend his title against Julian Williams on June 24th at The Armory in Minneapolis. From the Dominican Republic, Adames (22-1, 17 KOs) gained his secondary title when he knocked out Juan Macías Montiel in the third round on October 8th.

Adames wants to stay active while he waits for his chance to face Jermall Charlo, the WBC champion who is pushing two years of inactivity.

Williams, from Philadelphia, will be fighting for the second time at middleweight when he challenges Adames. The former 154-pound champion recently defeated Argentina's Rolando Mansilla (18-12-1, 8 KOs) by eight-round unanimous decision on November 5th.

Julian Williams Motivated, Aims To Use His Ring Smarts To Shock Carlos Adames

Julian Williams appears to be in a good mood on the Tuesday before one of the biggest fights of his career against Carlos Adames. The 12-rounder at The Armory in Minneapolis is his second consecutive appearance in the venue, and it’s for the interim WBC middleweight title.

So, at 33, the former junior middleweight boss from Philadelphia is less than 45 minutes on Saturday away from rejuvenating a career that stalled after back-to-back losses to Jeison Rosario and Vladimir Hernandez.

That’s pressure, but “J-Rock” isn’t letting anyone see him sweat. In fact, he’s quick with a laugh when asked if this is his annual appearance or will we be seeing more of him in 2023.

“It depends, man,” he said. “It depends.”

On what happens Saturday night?

“Well, I'm gonna win Saturday night. It just depends on the schedules.”

Since he won the WBA and IBF belts at 154 pounds by beating Jarrett Hurd in 2019, he’s only fought once in each of the ensuing years. That’s not a schedule any fighter wants, which begs the question – for a young man who already won a world title and could do anything he wants in life, is boxing still a hundred percent of that life like it always was?

“From where I'm at right now, I need it a hundred percent,” Williams said. “Because way before you even knew my name or knew who I was or seen me fight, I had a goal and I've been chasing this goal since I was a little boy, since the first day I walked in the gym. I used to watch HBO Boxing After Dark and I used to see Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones and all those guys win world titles. And I said that I wanted to be a two-division world champion - 154 and 160 - and Saturday night I got my opportunity to make that dream come true. So all the money that I made, all the money that I didn't make, or whatever, however you want to put it, it matters, but it don't really matter. What matters is the goal. If I accomplish the goal, the money's going to come. There’s only about so much money you can make anyway if you don’t get no glory.”

On Williams’ Twitter bio, Boxing Junkie comes after Muslim 1st, Pro Boxer and Proud Dad, but one read of his feed shows that even if he’s not in the ring, he cares about what’s going on in it, and not just what’s happening now, but what came before him. For a Philadelphia fighter, doing big things in the middleweight division means something, considering he will be following in the footsteps of Bernard Hopkins, Bennie Briscoe, “Cyclone” Hart, Willie Monroe, “Gypsy” Joe Harris, and Bobby Watts, just to name a few. So is this quest for a 160-pound title a Philly thing?

“I’m about to make it a Philly thing on Saturday night,” he laughs.

So this is not my romantic notion of Williams carrying on the middleweight legacy of his hometown?

“No, it's our romantic notion because with the Philadelphia middleweight scene over the years, obviously Bernard Hopkins leading the pack, I think it just makes for a great story.”

It does. An even better story would be one of redemption, of Williams beating the odds and upsetting the Dominican champion. I mention a quote I read where Adames said of the fight, “I see Williams as a dangerous opponent. He’s a former world champion who has a lot of experience and he has nothing to lose at this point in his career. I’m expecting a tough fight, but I feel I’m the better fighter in every aspect. I feel I can break him down and end the fight in the middle to late rounds.”

To me, the key part of that quote is “at this point in his career.” If I’m Williams, that might annoy me a bit. I’m apparently not Williams.

“I don't look at it like that,” he said. “I look at it as somebody put together a nice press release for him. (Laughs) Because it's fight week.”

So stirring the pot?

“That’s all.”

See, nothing appears to rattle Williams in the lead-up to Saturday night. And, at this point, maybe it shouldn’t. He’s been a pro for a long time, he’s a student of the game, and he knows that a good fight doesn’t need trash talk or over the top antics. And even if it had all that, the two combatants will still have to step through the ropes and fight. So all the speculation about where Williams goes from here is unnecessary in his mind, because it all rides on the result of his 12 rounds or less with Adames.

“You know what, I haven't even thought about that,” he said when asked about his future at 160. “I just want to focus on this tough 36 minutes I got coming up on Saturday night and then I'm gonna go from there.”

I ask him if he still enjoys the grind of the fight game. Or did he ever?

“I never really enjoyed it. I enjoy the feeling of winning and succeeding. So, with that being said, I know that I got to put my body through that for however long it takes for me to get to the point where I want to get to. So I don't necessarily like it, but I accept it and I push as hard as I can.”

It’s the paradox of Julian Williams. On one hand, he’s a thinking man’s fighter who knows the game. On the other, he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and engage in a fistfight. That’s a tough line to walk. Always has been, and apparently always will be.

“I think sometimes my temperament gets in the way of my brain, but this Saturday night, I want my brain to get in the way in my temperament.”

At least until Adames hits him. Then Williams has to hit him back.

“That’s how I was raised,” he laughs. “That's before boxing. My mom told me if somebody hits you, hit him back.”

Press Release | Showtime To Stream Three-Fight Countdown Show

Three showdowns featuring the return of two former world champions and an exciting rising prospect will highlight the Showtime Boxing Countdown live streaming presentation this Saturday, June 24 from The Armory in Minneapolis in a Premier Boxing Champions event.

Action live on the Showtime Sports YouTube channel and Showtime Boxing Facebook page will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT and is topped by former world champion Caleb “Golden” Truax taking on Burley Brooks in a 10-round light heavyweight clash.

The lineup will also see former world champion Jerwin Ancajas duel Colombia’s Wilner Soto in an eight-round super bantamweight attraction, and all-action super lightweight prospect Mickel Spencer facing Lyle McFarlane in a four-round bout. The live stream is hosted by award-winning Morning Kombat live digital talk show hosts Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell.

These fights precede a Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader headlined by top middleweight Carlos Adames defending his Interim WBC Middleweight Title against former unified champion Julian “J-Rock” Williams in a telecast beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Warriors Boxing, are on sale now and can be purchased at the Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster. Lubin vs. Arias is co-promoted with Mayweather Promotions.

A native of Osseo, Minn., Truax (31-5-2, 19 KOs) will return to fight at The Armory for the third time on Saturday night, as he looks to thrill his hometown fans in his first action since dropping a January 2021 world title fight to Caleb Plant by decision. Truax captured a 168-pound world title in December 2017, traveling to the U.K. to upset James DeGale and bring the belt back to The Gopher State. He will be opposed by the 27-year-old Brooks (6-2-1, 5 KOs), a Dallas-native who is guided by award-winning trainer Derrick James. Brooks began his career with six victories before losing narrow decisions to Marco Delgado and Cameron Sevilla Rivera. Most recently, Brooks fought Rivera to a split-draw in August 2021.

The 31-year-old Ancajas (33-3-2, 22 KOs) steps back into action after dropping a pair of decisions in world title fights against Fernando Martinez February and October of 2022. Fighting out of Panabo City, Davao Del Norte, Philippines, Ancajas won the 115-pound title in a lopsided unanimous decision victory over McJoe Arroyo in 2016 where he dropped his opponent in the eighth round and cruised to victory. Ancajas would go on to make nine successful defenses of the title before running into Martinez. He will take on the 32-year-old Soto (22-12,12 KOs), who most recently lost a decision to Jonathan Rodriguez in March. A native of Canalete, Colombia, Soto has faced a slew of top fighters throughout his career, including former unified 122-pound champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev.

Spencer (3-0, 2 KOs) is the younger brother of exciting super welterweight Joey Spencer and turned pro in August 2021 with a unanimous decision victory over Eliseo Villalobos. The 19-year-old from Linden, Mich., most recently wowed the crowd at The Armory in February with a sensational first-round stoppage of Margarito Hernandez. He faces the 26-year-old McFarlane, who fights out of Tulsa, Okla., and enters this fight having won back-to-back contests.

The non-televised undercard will feature super middleweight Shawn McCalman (12-0, 6 KOs) in an eight-round fight taking on Bo Gibbs Jr. (23-3, 9 KOs), super featherweight prospect Robert Meriwether III (3-0, 2 KOs) battling Ezra Rabin (1-1, 1 KO) in a four-round attraction, and Cincinnati’s Ray Robinson (1-0) dueling Ryan Raglin (3-9-1, 3 KOs) in a four-round featherweight showdown.

This is not the greatest card ever but it has a lot of exciting match-ups, setting some upcoming bouts.

I have Adames on points if not late stoppage.

Arias got hit with a punch and went down onto one knee.
While he was there he motioned to the referee that he had been hit on the back of his head.
The count continued and as Arias got up the referee waved it off indicating he hadn't made the count.
That's the way it looked it me.

adames in control so far and had williams rocking in the 4th, but then came out with a slower 5th. in past fight he's been offensively sharp in the first half but then slowed and looked unimaginative in the second half, so let's see what he does here. still looks strong

adames now focusing on the body these last two rounds. controlling the action and giving williams a bit of a pounding. williams seems to take body shots better than head though and is hanging in there, ocassionally firing back

I wonder if Adames will get the real belt after Charlo vacates it? Maybe Janibek will consider him a worthy opponent then?

It's pretty sickening for Mall to still have the belt. Hope he gets Canelo and gets beat down...and I'm not a Canelo fan.
