Reported in British & Irish section as well, farewell to the legendary former undisputed World Lightweight champion and lovely guy. RIP Champ.

The Goat out of Scotland, who won the World Lightweight Title from Ismael Laguna, defended his title twice including a rematch against Laguna before he controversially lost his title to Laguna's fellow Panamanian and more iconic "The Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran.
You are gone, but not forgotten for one of the Scottish boxing greats.

Great fighter, wins over Laguna and Carlos Ortiz as well. Also wins over Carlos Hernandez and Jim Watt who were very underrated. Rest easy Champ

I know of him more for how he was unfortunately in the 1980s and later when he had bad drinking problems and he made threats to make a comeback in order to have money so there would be benefits held for him from time to time. I do think in the 1980s he did come back fighting on the white collar circuit, but that was quickly put an end to by those raising money for him.
He will always be remembered as the guy who lost to Roberto Duran but I tend to think there was something special about him since people went on and on about that particular match. Unfortunately you don't see many write up's about him or other fight films about him that often.
I reckon the question should be asked where does he rank among the all time great European fighters?

That guy Ken Buchanan was a great lightweight boxer. A lot of people just remember him from that ill-fated fight with the great Roberto Duran. But, people forgot really, how good he was. He had lightning fast left jab, great lateral movement, a beautiful right cross, a granite chin (he was never ever knocked out cold or in queer street. That Duran stoppage wasn't really a knockout, but it was scored a knockout win in Duran's favor) and he could also fight inside. He could fight!
The guy was so good that he won titles in every level of competition in the pro ranks. He was Scotland, British Empire, European and World Lightweight Champion. Very impressive resume. He was the best at every level.
For sure a hall of famer and top 20 great lightweight in my view.
I missed the chance to meet him. I bought his autobiography, The Tartan Legend.

That's a very good question. Ken Buchanan probably is in the top 25 greatest European fighters ever. Buchanan was incredibly fit, had an immense jab, massive heart and stones, decent enough power, an extremely well schooled boxer, didn't have the resume his skills deserved, came up against a young ferocious animal in Roberto Duran

I just saw the two fights of Ken Buchanan against Ismael Laguna and also against Roberto Duran and Carlos Ortiz.
The two fights with Laguna were very close. Either of the two could have been the winner of any of their two fights. Both were great fights. Underrated fights that people don't talk much about.
Both fighters showed great boxing skills, grit, heart and determination fighting at tremendous fast pace for thirty rounds! Both of them were in extreme physical top shape to fight at that pace, especially in that heat in Puerto Rico.
I scored the first fight 145-142 in favor of Laguna in their first meeting. In the rematch, I scored it a draw. Like Erik "El Terrible" Morales against Marco Antonio Barrera, these two were equally matched. It was very hard to score their bouts because both showed so much class and competitiveness. Buchanan won by split decision in the judges cards in the first meeting and by unanimous decision in the rematch.
Buchanan fight with the great Carlos Ortiz was not that great of a match. It only lasted 6 rounds with an Ortiz that was 36 years old and over the hill. That was the night when the great Muhammad Ali faced Floyd Patterson in their rematch at MSG.
Ironically, Ortiz and Patterson had to their last fight in the same day and in the same arena.

Exactly. Ken Buchanan fans have this deluded idea that Duran was afraid to rematch Buchanan and Buchanan was robbed. Horseshit. Duran kicked his ass. It was one sided. Buchanan wasnt even competitive and his corner was trying to milk a DQ. What is always ignored by Buchanan fantasists is that Buchanan was the one who started punching after the bell. Duran's punch barely brushed Buchanan's trunks. His story about a dented cup and a ruptured testicle is absolute hogwash. First Clancy said that Duran "DEFINITELY" kneed him in the groin. Never happened. Then when they saw that they werent going to get a DQ Buchanan tried to change his mind and begged to continue the fight but the referee ruled that if Buchanan was that hurt he couldnt continue. So blame Buchanan. By his own admission he could have continued but tried to stay down for a Dq. Duran had dropped Buchanan, opened up two cuts, and was so far ahead on points that Buchanan needed a knockout to win.
