I do think in the 1980s he did come back fighting on the white collar circuit, but that was quickly put an end to by those raising money for him.
He will always be remembered as the guy who lost to Roberto Duran but I tend to think there was something special about him since people went on and on about that particular match. Unfortunately you don't see many write up's about him or other fight films about him that often.
I reckon the question should be askedwhere does he rank among the all time great European fighters?
That's a very good question. Ken Buchanan probably is in the top 25 greatest European fighters ever. I think he's right up there.elmersalsa wrote: ↑02 Apr 2023, 12:48HomicideHenry wrote: ↑01 Apr 2023, 22:28 I know of him more for how he was unfortunately in the 1980s and later when he had bad drinking problems and he made threats to make a comeback in order to have money so there would be benefits held for him from time to time. American referee Johnny LoBianco gave him time. Ken Buchanan wanted to win by DQ. End of story.davidroake wrote: ↑15 Apr 2023, 03:36 Ken Buchanan, one of the all time British greats, i wasnt sure he would be a good pro but he was and teak tough.
Poor refereeing saw him stopped by Duran.
Ok, he was losing on points but he should have been allowed extra time to recover after the low blow in the 13th
RIP Ken
You can't win a fight by TKO on an illegal shot. End of story or maybe you can with a buffoon of a refelmersalsa wrote: ↑15 Apr 2023, 17:02American referee Johnny LoBianco gave him time. American referee Johnny LoBianco gave Ken Buchanan time. Buchanan wanted to win by DQ. That's what it came down to. He was getting an whupping from post to post. Duran kicked his ass. Exactly. Ken Buchanan fans have this deluded idea that Duran was afraid to rematch Buchanan and Buchanan was robbed. Horseshit. Duran kicked his ass. It was one sided. Buchanan wasnt even competitive and his corner was trying to milk a DQ. What is always ignored by Buchanan fantasists is that Buchanan was the one who started punching after the bell. Duran's punch barely brushed Buchanan's trunks. His story about a dented cup and a ruptured testicle is absolute hogwash. First Clancy said that Duran "DEFINITELY" kneed him in the groin. Never happened. Then when they saw that they werent going to get a DQ Buchanan tried to change his mind and begged to continue the fight but the referee ruled that if Buchanan was that hurt he couldnt continue. So blame Buchanan. By his own admission he could have continued but tried to stay down for a Dq. Duran had dropped Buchanan, opened up two cuts, and was so far ahead on points that Buchanan needed a knockout to win. Buchanan is an overrated typical european fighter who boxes straight up behind a one-two. He had nothing in his arsenal to combat Duran staying on top of him all night, banging the body, not giving him any room to breath and tirelessly pounding away. The best thing to ever happen to Buchanan was the way that one sided fight ended because he lived off of that ending the rest of his life with his bitching and whining. Had it gone to its natural conclusion he would have been remembered as having lost in one sided fashion and had a rematch taken place he would have been stopped.elmersalsa wrote: ↑16 Apr 2023, 23:41American referee Johnny LoBianco gave Ken Buchanan time.
