Lewis van Poetsch Retires

Journeyman Lewis van Poetsch retires after 170 fights with a 14-152-4 record. He actually won 3 of his last 5 fights and gets a decent write-up from the BBC.

He's already started as a trainee ref and did his first ringside session on Saturday at the Joshua card.

It's fairly common for these career journeymen to pick up a win in their last fight, especially if its being billed as such

wish more fighters would get involved as judges, refs, coaches, etc than continue to fight way past their primes

It's also common for them to intentionally lose so they can make a living, not a dig at Van Poetsch btw he's been a tremendous servant to British boxing but id like to see the board bring in some sort of system where if a fighter loses X amount of fights in a row then they should receive a ban of sorts, until then promoters in this country along with Eastern Europe will continue to use guys are who are tough and durable as opposed to capable of winning, I've said it numerous times, pro boxing owes nobody a living, it's no different to match fixing

Absolutely I've seen Kevin McIntyre ref a few times and he's solid, gives decent scores as well, can't remember who it was but he went against the favorite and it was the correct call

Of course he was going to win his final fight but he did win a couple of others in his last fights. Great that he is moving into refereeing, it's very common in cricket for former players to become umpires I'm surprised you don't see it as much in boxing.

Yes but the other end of the coin is when they do try and win they get jobbed in the 4 rounders like every time because they're usually in the away corner facing the promotional boy in front of his fans
THEN if they actually do pick up a few legit wins, nobody pays them to fight their prospect because it's too dangerous, all this while navigating it around your own full time job and family usually

Promoters can lie and cheat and not get brain damage and everybody just says it's their job, but everything is stacked against the journeyman and he is still risking brain damage

Yeh your rights it's the system that's broken, amateur boxers don't get matched with gimmes, they are matched with similar level guys, for some reason pro boxing , the hardest sport of them all yet they get to fight guys with little or no intention of winning, novices should fight novices and so on

so will a former Journeyman as a referee score a fight for the journeyman if hes a winner or get controlled by the system and score it for the home fighter so more cards get put on and more money with his journeyman friends

Yes, it's great isn't it? He earned a living doing something he loves and now gets to continue in the sport in a different role.
