theres two ways to get hit by a right hand. when you stand squared up you will get hit by straight right hands through the center.

but when you stand three quarter you sever off the pathway straight right hands need to have to hit you from that direction.

and thats why when you walk into a boxing gym most trainers are going to stand you three quarter; as by cause of standing three quarter you stop straight right hands from hitting you through the center. but theres a trade off.
by standing three quarter you will get hit by big overhand rights behind the ear.

when you are standing squared up you will get hit by straight right hands through the center, but when you are standing three quarter you will get hit by big overhand rights behind the ear. in other words, you shut the door on that right hand at the cost of opening the door for a different kind of right hand. so what do you do?
when you stand three quarter to block his straight right hand through the center, he is going to see you with your hand up and try to hit you with a big overhand right behind the ear, right? but since he needs to reach around behind that hand to hit you behind your ear, by taking just a tiny step back, he cant reach around behind that hand anymore, and, therefore, he cant hit you.

when you stand three quarter with your hand up and scoot back in tiny increments, he cant hit you through the center, or reach around behind that hand to hit you behind your ear. by cause of that marriage of blocking and spacing, you take away the two ways a right hand can hit you at the same time. now you cant get hit by right hands. the next time you shadow box try practicing this.
