The Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia fight did even bigger business than those involved in the event expected.
Boxing Scene has learned that their Showtime Pay-Per-View main event generated approximately 1.2 million buys in the United States. Most insiders interviewed by Boxing Scene before Davis’ seventh-round knockout of Garcia projected that it would produce anywhere between 450,000 and 750,000 buys, which still would’ve been a success based on the state of the boxing pay-per-view business in the U.S.
Their 136-pound, non-title fight – which drew an announced sellout crowd of 20,842 to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas – also generated approximately $22.8 million in ticket sales. That ranks fifth in Nevada boxing history, behind only Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao (nearly $72.2 million), Mayweather-Conor McGregor (more than $55.4 million), Alvarez-Gennadiy Golovkin I (more than $27 million) and Alvarez-Golovkin II (more than $24.4 million).
Davis, 28, and Garcia, 24, are two of the most popular boxers in the sport, but piracy and high price points have negatively impacted pay-per-view sales in recent years. Their fight captivated casual boxing fans and the sport’s hardcore base alike, however, which helped make it Showtime Pay-Per-View’s most successful event since Mayweather-McGregor in August 2017.
Mayweather-McGregor drew a reported 4.3 million pay-per-view buys, behind only Mayweather-Pacquiao in May 2015. Mayweather-Pacquiao produced a record 4.6 million buys and more than $600 million in overall revenue.
The bout between Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) and Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) was produced and distributed by Showtime, but it was also sold by DAZN, PPV.com and numerous cable and satellite operators in the U.S. It cost $84.99 on all of those platforms except DAZN, which offered it to its annual and monthly subscribers for $59.99.
Showtime – which, like Boxing Scene, is owned by Paramount Global – has televised Davis’ last 13 fights either on pay-per-view or live on the network. Golden Boy Promotions, which has an exclusive output deal with DAZN, represents Garcia.

How accurate is this? We know boxing scene is owned by the same company which owns Showtime right?

1.2 milion @ 85 a buy…. That’s 100 million… I doubt this is accurate..
If it is fair play, let Ryan go win a wba reg belt at 140 (or WBC can make up a belt for him).and do the rematch at 140no hydration clause.

Hard to dub a guy the new face of PPV coming off a KO loss, but Oscar did it

Yes, but surely his marketable dropped significantly when he dropped.
They may be able to hype up a rematch between the 2 in a few years if Garcia gets some noteworthy wins in the interim.
Na. Doubt it. His supporters won’t care if he lost to Tank.
I guess. The Boxing marketing system kinda mystifies me now to be honest. Apparently it does you more good to get in good with the people on Twitter or whatever than to beat people

This week we may get the real PPV number for the Tank vs Garcia fight.
Word is Friday the fight was tracking at 600,000 PPV buys (USA)
Did you know Tank vs Hector Garcia did 61,000 PPV buys? Pretty crap

I dunno, how Garcia is that popular. A fringe contender without anything really special either in charisma or in the ring performance.

Social media mate, like Tommy Fury. Both a bit more male model than boxer
Garcia can go on to make tons of money fighting on the youtuber gigs.

Well, I can understand it with Tommy, since he's a cousin of the star boxer, but Garcia is an absolutely lackluster personality.

He is a good looking young fella. I have seen his fan base at some events and it is well represented by the ladies

“Believe me, when they do it again, that fight can do four million homes easy,” said De La Hoya to spam about a rematch between Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.

More than anything casuals follow the W though. Garcia's stock will have dropped after this fight, he's still a big name, but Tank is generally the one trending upwards in terms of notoriety. If his next fight is Haney, Loma, Shakur or a Cruz rematch it'll do really well I think.

Considering the stream didn't work for alot of people, so they bought the PPV twice or even thrice, the real numbers are probaly half that.

That's only on DAZN's end, and I think they were only around 400,000 of those buys. Even if half the people purchased twice, that's 200,000 less than the actual figure, not half.

so you're saying 200.000 people payed 100 bucks for the fight, then their stream didn't work and they paid another 100 bucks and for some the shit still didn't work and those paid for a third time?
are you sure some didn't pay a forth or fifth time and still didn't get to see the fight?
hard to imagine one would pay a second time but if you say some people payed thrice on the same evening, well... pretty interesting stuff.

I'm not saying anything, I don't know an awful lot about it except there were some complaints on Twitter about the DAZN stream not working and people having to pay multiple times. You're better off quoting the guy who made the original post. All I was saying to him is it was a DAZN issue and if DAZN employees are to be believed they only contributed a third of sales, so if it's half of them that had to repurchase that's only a sixth of total buys, which would be 200,000, not 600,000. So the real number may still be a million if the 1.2m figure is to be believed.
