Just been watching the boxing on Sky tonight. Hickman v Wright. It was a poor fight and a poor fightcard to be broadcast live on Sky. I think its good that Sky are showing a small hall show but these are not shows promoted by small hall promoters. I find it amazing that both British Champions from opposite ends of the country aren't shown on TV. Michael Hunter and Scott Dann have both proved to be exciting champions but don't seem to get the coverage they deserve.

Down here in the West Country Chris Sanigar keeps boxing alive with regular shows in Bristol and Plymouth. The shows are always good value. You'll be suprised to know that there are some half decent fighters as you never get a chance to see them on the tv! Obviously Scott Dann flies the flag at present, Lee Haskins English Flyweight Champ is an exciting talent also. Dan Guthrie is a good prospect. Leigh Alliss v Valery Odin before xmas was one of the best scraps I've seen in years but unless you were there you'll never get to see it. Even Boxing News did not give that fight the recognition it deserved! It was a small hall classic - not seen very often unfortunatley these days.

Best of luck for the future Hunter and Dann and lets hope a TV Company gives you and your managers/promoters the reward they deserve!

Didn't think Wright-Hickman was too bad but I concur with everything else.

Would love to see the likes of Hunter and Dann be showcased on TV.

I agree with Ian on paper Wright v Hickman was a good match up between two young prospects. It was just a clash of styles. I find it much better viewing watching two domestic fighters than watching one of our young british prospects boxing a russian, african, etc.

I've heard a lot of good things about the shows, but sadly it's out of my area. I just wish more of the smaller promoters could get their fighters on TV, a lot of people (me included) are missing out on the chance to see our domestic fighters.

The knock on effect of this of course is that not enough of our fighters have any profile.

Isn't there any way someone like Bravo can pick up on this opportunity? Perhaps if people were to lobby them they might take up the opportunity, there's certainly a few of us here who could get on their case.

Wright vs Hickman was a little disappointing but as others have said I think that was just a clash of styles.

I enjoyed Rushton vs Armstrong both fighters were there to win and they put on a great show for the fans. I thought Rushton did well in his first 10 rounder against the more experienced Armstrong.

Rushtons record suggests that he lack power, which may prove a problem if his steps in with one of the UK's top Light-Middleweights. But matched carefully with his (from last nights fight) crowd pleasing style may have a profitable future in the sport, at domestic level.

I'm still waiting for Bennett vs Phillips to be shown on TV. Did it get shown?

Am in Magaluf with the Hunter now. I dropped him in the hotel lobby last night with a well timed rib bender. Can anyone tell me whethere I have a legitimate claim to the British title if I boil down to 8st 10¿

I've more or less given up on Sky! didn't even bother taping the show last night! complete shite imo.

Not great fare to be paying 41 quid a month for, certainly. But, to be honest, 90% of boxing shows are pretty much of that quality these days.

Not blockbusters but just run of the mill stuff.

thats because sky tv isnt like american tv. american tv demand matches and decide what to show, if british tv did that we probably allready seen hatton vs Witter, Calzaghe vs Ried 2, thoses type of matches, and a hell of a lot more all british clashes.

Indeed, Chris. You have to think that the men in charge of the TV simply don't know their boxing. The promoters go to them and do an excellent job of building up an ordinary match and sky do their best to sell it. So the armchair punter thinks he is getting something fantastic. When it isn't, it can hurt the sport.

If a fight fan was in a top position with Sky or the Beeb, you can guarantee there would be more competitive fights.

I think that is one of the big problems with boxing coverage in this country right now... the TV people behind it basically don't know enougth about the game... or else just don't care. The danger is that in the near future instead of putting their foot down and demanding better matches I think they will just say 'balls!' to it and pull the plug on the sport.
Really that has already partly happened with Boxing being demoted to Fridays on Sky.... The sad thing is I'm not sure if I really care anymore if all there is to look foward to is another 10 years of Allegedly's fodder.

Ironically, for the boxing purist, you are probably right. But I bet Joe Public would go for the big lads whaling away at each other.

Sorry but as I said before that was not a bill worthy of headling a show on pay TV. That and the Skelton bill are the two worst Sky have put on in a long long time and so close together makes things seem pretty bad at the moment. I really think it's about time Sky worked with every promoter on a fight by fight basis. Allegedly completely takes the piss with mismatches and crap shows if it was all done fight by fight then there would have to be a marked improvement in quality. Once a promoter gets an exclusive TV deal he's free to do as he likes and can put any old shit on the box on a friday/saturday night.

As has been commented elsewhere can't believe Dann's recent fight wasn't on TV yet we are getting friday night filler cards like the one just gone.

Not trying to disrespect any of the fighters involved but the headline fight last friday Wright v Hickman was a chief supporting contest type fight at best IMO.

This may be incorrect, but the Steve Foster JR fight for the ahem 'WBU' belt was only made into a ahem 'world' title fight because sky demanded it because Calzaghe had pulled out.

If true, and i am inclined to beleive it, it really does show that sky dont give a hoot about boxing, they should have at least tried to get him to fight for the british title, that would have been far more interesting to me.
