WBA orders Rolando Romero to fight Ohara Davies in first defense

Looks like Ismael Barroso won’t be getting the rematch he deserves, as the WBA has ordered newly crowned champion Rolando Romero to defend his super lightweight title against mandatory challenger Ohara Davies.

The pair have until June 29th to come to terms and until September 12th to share a ring.

Davies (25-2, 18 KO), now nearly six years removed from his drubbing at the hands of JOsh Taylor, has won seven straight since falling to Jack Catterall in 2018. Though that run began with a questionable decision over the eternally shafted Miguel Vazquez, he went on to beat Tyrone McKenna in the Golden Contract finals and crush Lewis Ritson with a body shot this past March.

“Two Tanks,” whose nickname produces a beautiful mashup of Monty Python and Neil Cicierega in my head, has a golden opportunity here to snag a world title. Romero (15-1, 13 KO) pales in comparison to the likes of Regis Prograis and Subriel Matias, and if “Rolly” looks as poor as he did against Barroso, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Davies join Taylor as a champion.

Davies is a lot more likeable now. Good win against Ritson. I think he can do the business here.

The real ticket here would be to sell this shot to Ryan Garcia and contract yourself in as his first defence if he wins.

Interesting that some give Davies a good chance of winning against Romero, because of the first 7 votes; 6 have gone for Romero by stoppage and only 1 for Davies (by stoppage).

They have kind of a weird mirror style,

Davis will have to win 13 of the 12 rounds to get a decision

So I think the purse bids for this are on Friday and it wouldn’t surprise if Eddie bids for it and signs Ohara to a deal.

Eddie seems to think him and OD are mates and will also want to get one over Ellerbe who had a backwards and forwards with OD with Ellerbe essentially saying to OD to know his place.

If OD’s able to get the win then it puts him pretty high demand I think with the other guys in the division likely wanting a shot at the title.

Both seem to surprise opponents with their physical strength

They haven’t.

The 30 day period ended 29th I think.

Romero-Davies: WBA Sets July 24 Purse Bid For 140-Pound Title Fight


A purse bid date has been assigned to the Rolando Romero-Ohara Davies clash.

WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza confirmed that the sanctioning body will hold a July 24 hearing to determine promotional rights for the mandatory 140-pound title fight.

As previously reported by BS.com, the bout was destined for a purse bid after the 30-day deadline came and went without a deal reached—or any progress at all made—for their ordered title fight. The hearing will be open to all WBA-registered promoters, who are required to submit a participation fee along with a minimum accepted $110,000 bid to be eligible. Romero is due 75 percent of the winning amount, with the remaining 25 percent to go to Davies as the mandatory challenger.

Romero is represented on paper by Mayweather Promotions, though TGB Promotions was the promoter of record for his May 13th ninth-round stoppage of Ismael Barroso to win the vacant WBA junior welterweight title. Davies is guided by Lee Eaton’s Let’s Go Management company.

Romero was originally due to face then-defending titleholder Alberto Puello (21-0, 10KO), who was forced out of the Showtime main event after he tested positive for the banned substance Clomiphene. Puello—who was issued a backdated six-month suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission on June 20—was replaced by Barroso, who dropped Romero in round three and led on all three scorecards through eight rounds.

The fateful round nine saw referee Tony Weeks credit Romero with a knockdown that was caused by a push and then stop the fight despite Barroso having not absorbed a single punch during the final exchange.

Because Romero was not a mandatory challenger and won a vacant title, he is now locked int to honor against the next leading contender to avoid being stripped of the belt.

Davies (25-2, 18KOs) was guaranteed the next shot at the WBA title currently in Romero’s possession. He earned the mandatory ranking with a ninth-round knockout of countryman Lewis Ritson in a March 4 title eliminator in Ritson’s hometown of Newcastle, England. The win was his seventh in a row since a twelve-round, unanimous decision defeat to countryman Jack Catterall who was unbeaten at the time of their October 2018 clash.

The lone other defeat suffered by Davies came in a seventh-round stoppage of Josh Taylor in their July 2017 battle of unbeaten prospects.

Not so sure that’s the case unfortunately.

I reckon davies could do it. Vastly overrated is Rolly, absolute mouthpiece has getting him where he is. Narrative about beating Gervonta was daft really, Davis gives away rounds when he's uber confident he can spark you.

On a good day davies is awkward. He's quietly went about his business and has a fair bit of experience to fall back on.

Strange world if he ends up with a world title with Josh Taylor seemingly on the scrap heap.

Hmmm. I’m a little surprised he isn’t talking to Matchroom. They have plenty to offer at 140 and Rolly is a winnable fight for Davies.
