LEE MCGREGOR SIGNS WITH WASSERMAN, HEADLINES IN EDINBURGH JULY 21

Wasserman Boxing has just announced the signing of former British and European bantamweight champion Lee McGregor to a long-term promotional contract.

The international promoter also revealed in a recent press release that the 12-0-1 (9 KOs) McGregor will headline a major show in his hometown of Edinburgh on Friday, July 21, live on UK terrestrial network, Channel 5.

McGregor will box in front of his people for the first time in five years at the Meadowbank Sports Centre in the Scottish capital.

The 26-year-old raced to British, Commonwealth and European bantamweight glory in just 10 fights but now has his sights set on conquering the super bantamweight division with the backing of new promoters Wasserman Boxing.

“Listen, it’s going to be loud and it’s going to be unbelievable on July 21,” McGregor said upon the announcement. “I’ve been waiting so long for this. I have had so many big nights in Scotland, the most memorable being the British and Commonwealth unification fight with Kash Farooq, but that was in Glasgow, not in my hometown.

“I’ve not fought in Edinburgh since my professional debut in 2017. But in July, people will see how big a fan base I have. It’s going to be loud and it’s going to be rowdy.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “Everyone at Wasserman Boxing is over the moon to add Lee to our brilliant stable of fighters.

“He is, without any shadow of a doubt, a world class operator who showed, in his first 10 fights, just how special he is. But the best is yet to come from Lee.

“He is destined to be a world champion and we start out on that road on July 21 in Edinburgh, his hometown, where we are braced for an atmosphere we have not experienced in a long time. Lee promises us the place is going to be bouncing and we cannot wait!”

McGregor added:“I have lots of things to look forward to and this is a new chapter for my career.

“The goals are set; the plans are in place and I’m going to take over. I am back to where I belong, in big fights on big nights. I really like what Wasserman are doing with their fighters and it feels like they are going to give me what I deserve. The plan is to come back and build me in Scotland and in my hometown. I made my professional debut on Channel 5 and so it is a great platform to be back on. Wasserman know what they are doing and the plans they have in place for me, I am more than happy about. The future is bright.”

Press Release

Wasserman Boxing has announced the signing of Lee McGregor to a long-term promotional contract.

And it was revealed that the unbeaten ‘Lightning’ will headline a show in his hometown of Edinburgh on Friday, July 21, live-and-free-to-air on Channel 5.

Delivered in association with Ladbrokes, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment, McGregor will box in front of his fans for the first time in five years, with his return set to be met with a frenzied atmosphere at the Meadowbank Sports Centre.

Lee McGregor will face "Terrible" Mexican Erik Robles for the vacant IBO world super bantamweight title

The vacant IBO world super bantamweight title will be on the line when Lee McGregor makes a hero’s return to Edinburgh next month.

‘Lightning’ Lee McGregor (12-0-1, 9KO) faces the dangerous Mexican ‘Terrible’ Erik Robles (13-1, 9KO) at the Meadowbank Sports Centre on Friday, July 21, live-and-free-to-air on Channel 5.

Excitement levels were already through the roof for McGregor’s homecoming, but the stakes have been raised with today’s news that the Hearts supporter will be fighting for the IBO belt.

Tickets for the 26-year-old's shot at world glory go on sale at 12pm today and are expected to sell out quickly.

The Wasserman Boxing event, delivered in association with Ladbrokes, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment, will be McGregor’s first since signing with the global promoter and he has described the fight as potentially “life changing”.

But the former bantamweight king knows that Mexico’s Robles is a "very risky” opponent to face and is predicting a bruising battle in front of a full house.

Lee McGregor said: “It’s a big fight, it’s a life changing fight for me.

“I didn’t think it would be possible to go straight back into a big title fight like this, and so when it got put forward, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“It’s going to get the fans buzzing, get people talking about me again and so I need to go in and put on a performance to pick up this belt and add it to my collection.

“But it is very, very risky with these fights. We’ve seen time and time again with Mexicans coming over to the UK and upsetting people, so I need to be switched on.”

Erik Robles, the hard-hitting southpaw who has stopped four of his last five opponents, said: “On July 21, in Edinburgh, I will add my name to the long list of world champions from Mexico.

“Everyone expects McGregor to win this fight, he is the favourite and he has his home fans on his side, but he has never faced a Mexican fighter before. Next month, he will learn all about the Mexican fighting spirit.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “We had an incredible reaction when we revealed Lee would be fighting back in Edinburgh, so today’s news that he will also be fighting for the IBO world title, is going to send his fans wild.

“Everyone at Wasserman Boxing is delighted to deliver this opportunity for Lee and we know, with the backing of his amazing fans, he is going to grab it with both hands, in what promises to be an exceptional fight on a memorable night.”

Press Release | Matty Harris To Face Dovbyshchenko

British heavyweight prospect Matty Harris has been added to the undercard of Lee McGregor’s world title homecoming.

Harris, the 6’8” destroyer looks to become the first man to stop Kostyantin Dovbyshchenko, when they collide at the Meadowbank Sports Centre, Edinburgh on Friday July 21, live and free-to-air on Channel 5.

The Wasserman Boxing event, delivered in association with Ladbrokes, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment, sees McGregor face the dangerous Mexican Erik Robles for the vacant IBO world super bantamweight title.

And the first fight confirmed for the undercard next month, is the heavyweight battle between Harris and Dovbyshchenko.

Harris has halted his last four opponents and the 23-year-old delivered a shuddering statement of intent in front of the Channel 5 cameras in March, when he took less than 30 seconds to wipe the floor with Milos Veletic.

Many expect Ukraine’s Dovbyshchenko, who took the highly touted Moses Itauma the six round distance earlier this year, to test Harris but the man known as ‘Magic’ has other ideas.

“I don’t think I will have any trouble getting him out of there,” declared the 5-0 Harris.

“I’m 19st and with these 10oz gloves on, I hit people very hard. These gloves are unforgiving, especially when you are as explosive as I am.

“If he gets past the first round, then I’m getting him in the second.”

Marty Harris vs Dobvyshenko (sp) on the undercard here.

If they’re looking to push him they’d make this over 8 to show he’s ahead of Itauma for now.

Press Release | Harlem Eubank Added

Harlem Eubank will tackle Ishmael Ellis in Edinburgh next week, as part of Lee McGregor’s homecoming show.

The unbeaten Brighton stylist fights Ellis over 10 rounds, live and free-to-air on Channel 5, at the Meadowbank Sports Centre, on Friday, July 21.

‘Lightning’ McGregor headlines the show by taking on Mexican puncher Erik Robles for the vacant IBO world super bantamweight title on what promises to be an emotionally charged night in the Scottish capital.

Now, super lightweight contender Eubank has been confirmed for the undercard, which already boasts the UK heavyweight prospect, Matty Harris, world-ranked super featherweight star, Sultan Zaurbek and returning featherweight contender Isaac Lowe.

Wasserman Boxing, in association with Ladbrokes, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment, can also reveal that heavyweight Kash Ali will face Bodhan Myronets over six rounds on an evening not-to-be-missed.

The full card, with emerging talents and local heroes still to be announced, will be confirmed in the coming days.

Eubank said: “The super lightweight scene is on fire at the moment, both domestically and internationally, and I know I am on the cusp of some huge fights.

“And because those big fights are on the horizon, there is no room for error, so I have to be firing on all cylinders in Edinburgh on July 21.

“But training has gone very well, and I plan on making a statement in front of the Scottish fans.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman Boxing, said: “This is going to be a breakthrough year for Harlem, where his career goes to new levels.

“He dealt brilliantly with a late replacement, as the headline fighter, at York Hall in March and now, in Edinburgh next week, he gets to show what he is all about to a new audience.

“Harlem is on the brink of some massive nights and, mark my words, he will be the next Eubank to become a world champion.”

FINAL PRESSER QUOTES

McGregor said: "I never back down from a challenge, I'm a fighter and fear no challenge. The atmosphere on Friday night is going to be electric and I am sure the crowd will help me if times get tough. You know what you are getting with these Mexican fighters and Robles is going to come and have a fight."

Here are more quotes from the final press conference:

LEE McGREGOR

"I've got the biggest heart out there. There is no quit in me and it is going to take something special to beat me on Friday night.

"I've been through far too much to not come away victorious and there is no way I am accepting leaving not leaving with that belt.

"They call me the Scottish Mexican because of my style and this is going to be an exciting fight because our styles match up well."

ERIK ROBLES

"I am not worried about being the away fighter and there is no pressure on me.

"Mexicans bring war everywhere they fight, this will be the same and I am not scared at all.

"Lee is really good fighter, he hits hard and this is going to be a war and a great fight. But Mexico is going to win."

PROMOTER NISSE SAUERLAND

"This has been a long time coming and I couldn't believe Lee had not fought in his hometown since his debut in 2017.

"This is not an easy fight but should Lee win on Friday night, then the world is his oyster and there are a lot of big fights out there for him.

"We promoted Josh Taylor during the World Boxing Super Series and we know there is a huge boxing market in this part of the world, and so we wanted to deliver this homecoming for Lee."

BEN DAVISON, McGregor's coach:

"Lee thrives on pressure. He captured three titles in such a short space of time and a lot of those title fights have seen his best performances.

"Lee has got so many great attributes, one of which is his big heart. Hopefully we don't need to show that on Friday night, Lee is well-schooled, he's also huge for the weight, big and strong and he prepares himself well."
