Press Release | Erik Bazinyan vs, Ronald Ellis Set For Montreal

Erik Bazinyan and Ronald Ellis will face off on October 11th as part of the event being staged by Eye of the Tiger at the Casino de Montreal. The NABF and NABA super middleweight titles, currently held by Bazinyan, will be at stake.

This bout will be broadcast live on Punching Grace and ESPN+, serving as the co-main event for the IBF and IBO super middleweight world championship fight between Mary Spencer and Femke Hermans.

Currently ranked #2 by WBA, #3 by WBC, and IBF, Bazinyan (30-0, 21 KOs) has had a successful journey since turning pro. His adversity level rose after facing Alantez Fox, Marcelo Esteban Coceres, and Jose de Jesus Macias, and he now wants to show he's ready for high-profile fights.

"This fight is like a main event. We know Ellis's tenacity and determination in the ring, and we see this match as a good challenge for Erik. With his rankings and the progress he's made, he's at that level now. We have high aspirations for him, and Ellis is one more step to cross to reaffirm himself in the super middleweight division and show the federations that Bazinyan is a formidable opponent for the 168 elite," says EOTTM President Camille Estephan.

As demonstrated in his fight against Christian Mbilli and the #1 WBC contender David Benavidez, Ellis (18-3-2, 12 KOs) has shown a strong ability to take punches. Having faced several elite boxers in the division, he has gained valuable experience.

Eye of the Tiger will soon reveal the opponents for their proteges participating in the event, including Simon Kean (23-1, 22 KOs), Wilkens Mathieu (3-0, 2 KOs), Leïla Beaudoin (9-1, 1 KO), Mehmet Unal (4-0, 4 KOs), and Jhon Orobio (3-0, 3 KOs).

Erik Bazinyan Blasts Ronald Ellis With Right Hand, Drops & Stops Him In 6th Round

A focused, sharp Erik Bazinyan boxed well Wednesday night and produced one of the most impressive performances of his 10-year pro career.

The Armenian-born, Quebec-based super middleweight contender out-worked American veteran Ronald Ellis for five-plus rounds and landed a right hand that abruptly ended their scheduled 10-rounder in the sixth round on the Mary Spencer-Femke Hermans undercard at Montreal Casino in Montreal. Bazinyan’s right hand to the top of Ellis’ head knocked him flat on his back with 1:34 to go in the sixth round.

Ellis got up by the time referee Alain Villeneuve counted to eight, but he didn’t respond to Villeneuve’s command to walk forward and Villeneuve stopped their fight. The official time of the stoppage was 1:44 of the sixth round.

Bazinyan, 28, upped his record to 31-0 and produced his 22nd knockout. Ellis (18-4-2, 12 KOs), of Lynn, Massachusetts, lost by knockout for the first time in 24 professional fights.

Ellis ended a 22-month layoff by battling Bazinyan, who accomplished something David Benavidez couldn’t do by knocking out the durable Ellis. The 33-year-old Ellis, a frequent sparring partner of Canelo Alvarez, hadn’t boxed before Wednesday night since unbeaten contender Christian Mbilli beat him by unanimous decision in a 10-rounder that took place in December 2021.

In the round before he knocked out Ellis, Bazinyan turned to a southpaw stance after the halfway point of the fifth round and blocked most of Ellis’ punches as he backed Bazinyan into the ropes. Ellis let his hands go more in the fifth round, but he was clearly behind on the cards entering the sixth round.

Bazinyan pressured Ellis for much of the fourth round. He landed a right hand around Ellis’ guard with about 15 seconds on the clock in the fourth round.

Bazinyan’s counter left hook rocked Ellis a few seconds before the third round concluded. Bazinyan’s right previously landed about 1:15 into the third round.

Bazinyan blasted Ellis with a right hand with just under 15 seconds to go in the second round. Another right hand by Bazinyan connected just before the bell sounded to end the second round.

Ellis landed a short right uppercut on the inside with just under 45 seconds remaining in the second round.

Ellis landed a right hand and got out of Bazinyan’s punching range a few seconds before the first round ended.

Bazinyan landed a right hand to the side of Ellis’ head with just under a minute to go in the first round. Bazinyan looked decent. Expected more from Ronald Ellis but he has been badly inactive and it showed.
