Why do so many middle-aged men like to pretend they "know" boxers?

I'm sure you have all seen the type--a middleaged, balding, overweight man posing next to Anthony Joshua or Eubank or Hatton, a scowl on their face and their fists held up. The photo clearly taken at one of those "a meal with xxxxxx" events.
Then framing it on the pub wall and telling anyone who glances at it "Aye, it's Lennox Lewis, tha knows! Ah used t'spar wi' 'im down at t'Sheffield Leisure centre, ah did." or "Josh Warrington, like. Ah used t'train him back when ah lived in Leeds, tha knows."

For me it's just a bit of hype.
Been to a few media days, public workouts etc. Don't see the hype.
They're just humans, with more money than me.

The ones that amuse me are the middle age men walking around in t shirts of the local pro, whose record is 6-0 against journeyman. As if they are in with a world champion, comical that.
Your average man in the street knows virtually nothing about boxing so they think if someoneβs a Pro they must be good. When in reality we all know that couldnβt be further from the truth.

Not to me. They are like Greek Gods or Marvel Super-heroes.
I've met Joe Joyce 3 times just to say hello to and wish him good luck in future fights. If I'm on my second pint then I do sort of act like I know him.
I am middle-aged. I'm not bald or overweight. But I do see both in my near future.

It's surprising I admit, with boxers and footballers these days - I am old enough to be their father - there is no chance of me heroworshipping a sportsperson today like I did Mike Tyson or Mark Hughes back in the eighties when I was a kid. I find it bizarre but I am sure most middle aged men don't.

Sparky! The ultimate big game player and scorer of a phalanx of leap-up-from-the-sofa goals.
It bothers me not one jot that he is slowly morphing into Glenn Close.
He's a good mate of mine...

Im in no position to comment.
At Manchester airport security two weeks ago today, I had my bag checked, then it was my sons turn, then my daughter and next to be done in the queue was Sunny Edwards' man bag.
Never been so excited in an airport.

I said they amuse me when I see them.
What I didnβt say was I get amused daily down the pub where Iβm inundated with these types of people.

I let on to Ricky Hatton a few years ago, he nodded back, I think he's one of my best mates now, not seen him since then but you know how it is, both busy and what not.

I kissed Nigel Benn's fist when he was DJ'ing in a nightclub in Aug '97. I have never kissed anyone or anything else since that night.
He also commented on painting I did of him v G-Man on twutter a couple of years ago. I'm unsure if he knew it was painted by the fist kisser? I'm assuming he did though.

You get arrested and thrown in jail if you say you "know" boxers nowadays?

It means different things to different people I guess.
I understand having a pic taken with a famous person you may have a load of respect for, but I cringe every time I see a fan having their photo taken with an ex boxer whilst raising a clenched fist .. what's that all about
