Eubank Jr. on Facing Janibek-Gualtieri Winner: I Don't Know Who They Are, So General Public Doesn't

Middleweight contender Chris Eubank Jr. is sizing up his options in 2023.

A few weeks ago in Manchester, Eubank dominated and stopped Liam Smith in their high-stakes rematch.

The most talked about option is a lucrative showdown with welterweight Conor Benn, but Benn has yet to fully resolve his legal issues with the British Boxing Board of Control and UK Anti-Doping - with respect to a pair of positive drug tests from 2022.

There are several other options at hand - including world title fights at middleweight.

WBC champion Jermall Charlo has been out of the ring for two years. There is WBA champion Erislandy Lara, but he's in line for a defense against Danny Garcia.

And on October 14, Janibek Alimkhanuly fights Vincenzo Gualtieri in a unification for the WBO and IBF belts.

Fighting the winner of Alimkhanuly vs. Gualtieri will present Eubank with a two belt opportunity - but the British star indicates that he's never heard of either boxer and also believes their profiles are far too low to generate a big pay-per-view event.

"The names you just mentioned, I genuinely haven't seen these guys fight before. I don't know who they are. And I'm in the game. So the general public are not going to know who these guys are, which means it's hard for them to tune in if you're making it a pay-per-view event which a world title should be," Eubank said to Sky Sports.

"So you've got to be smart. You've got to build a fight in the right way and you've got to have it in the right place and at the right time. That is up to the promoters. That's their job, to fit all that together. It's my job to fight. I do want to fight for a world title, 100 percent. But the politics that comes with all that, it's not easy to navigate sometimes. I'm just blessed to be in a position where I don't have to be in world title fights to be a part of huge fights. Most guys, they need the belts to be in big fights. That's what makes them box office, or makes them worth tuning in for.

"I don't need a belt to captivate an audience. I do that with how I fight. I do that with how I speak, I do that with who I am as a man and as a fighter. Now if we can get both in at the same time, that's the dream. A big name and a world title together, it's very hard to pull off. But I'm going to try everything I can to do that. We just have to take out time and plan the best route."

Would it sell as a PPV? I’m not so sure to be honest.

GGG is the only fight at middleweight that would sell, and he looks like hes retired. Other than that hes reduced to calling out retired or banned ww's. Not a wasted career, but a strange/unothodox one.

He's an idiot. It's an investment. If he was to hold two belts then he instantly bumps up the PPVs of his next fight, the attention he would get from the media would increase significantly and his negotiating power would increase if he wants to fight a big name because he would hold the belts that they want.

Yeh, promoters love selling a fight as 'world championship bout'

That's why they go for these wba interim, regular and ibo belts.

Thing is though hes probably an exception where he's managed to sell ppvs without a world title. In many instances, i would imagine, he's generated more revenue than genuine world title holders.

Makes a mockery of the game a bit.

Yup, he's all about the money, can't blame him really if 80,000 numpties are willing to pay fortunes to watch him beat up connor benn at Wembley he may as well go that route.

Isn’t he only a ticket seller when there’s a beef attached? He sells on the strength of the event, not him as a fighter. I fear a world title tilt against a scrabble tile named opponent would only fill a leisure centre.

Doesn’t care about being world champion then a wasted career if doesn’t try and win a world championship

Saying you haven’t heard of 2 of the world champions in your own division is a bit dumb when you then claim to want to win a world title.

He’s an odd character but he talks nonsense in his own way. Bit like his old man in that respect.

He could have had a chance against Gualtieri but Janibek schools him.

He just wants to make money with Benn and then Saunders, after that he’ll be fighting Jake Paul or Tommy Fury.

It is called prizefighting after all.

Agree.
He has made a ton of money without really achieving any of the conventional milestones. He has also avoided facing a champion for years despite being highly ranked and a good earner inside the UK.
Credit to the guy, yes some of it is the name, but that has been backed up by some pretty entertaining fights.

do you or anyone know how much money he has made? he's got a massive house in Brighton and is always bombing about in supercars (presuming he owns them of course). he really has done well to earn so much. he's not done bad beltwise I don't think either, British champ, narrow loss for Euro title, won IBO, WBA Interim. I think he can nick a WBO like his dad before he packs in.

He isn't going anywhere near Janibek, pretty certain of that. All wrong for CEJ plus the money he can make elsewhere seems to be his main motivator, despite the opportunity to be a unified world champion.

Easily £15 million all up. The WBSS semi final was a good earner, as were both the Smith fights.

Sadly, Eubank jnr has become a joke. Once a good fighter, he's not interested in top level fights or world title fights any more.

Going from Canelo to Eubank jnr isn't going to get GGG motivated. Chris jnr is a piss ant in terms of being mentioned in the same company as GGG.

Looks like he's well and truly entering the novelty stage of his failing career

i think ggg's basically retired, i saw footage of him recently releasing a sports drink in kazak, and he looked well past boxing

eubank talked for years about ggg and other elite fighters, and none of those fights came to fruition. he did fight some deecent opposition here and there, but a lot more bark than bite

My mate is a really good poker player and gets invites to big private games in Knightsbridge etc. Said Eubank there quite a bit. Not drinking but eating Jammy Dodgers! It’s an image that regularly blows my mind.

Jesus, he's earned brilliantly then. Fair play to him.
