Those who had a successful amateur career, possibly winning Olympic medals, would be the biggest disappointments as there would have been higher expectations than your average debutant.

Henry Armstrong lost by a third round KO on his debut and was 1-3 after four fights. He was only stopped once more in his entire career of 180 fights (149-21-10)

Any Olympic Gold Medalist or Silver Medalist who lost their Debut has to be the biggest letdown. When you're that accomplished as an Amateur your expectations are through the roof obviously.

Michael Bentt was a hot amateur and he lost his debut by stoppage, wearing Kronk shorts and with Manny Steward in his corner.

Was something spectacular expected of him? I know he took up boxing while in prison but wasn't really known at all in the sport back then was he? He didn't have an amateur career.

I was just browsing his record and found that he had a more than a year layoff after losing his debut in 1988 and then fought eight times in 1990. Does anyone know what he did in 1989? Trained like crazy I suppose.

No, nobody knew who he was or noticed. Which raises the question of whether something can be disappointing in retrospect.

I don't see anyone knocking him off tbh.
2 x Olympic Gold medalist, 26 and in his prime years, amatuer record of 420-30 or something, gets knocked down within the first minute of the fight and goes on to lose a decision against a 4-2-2 guy that was more or less hand picked for him.

Wilfredo Gomez, world amateur champion, was held to a draw on his pro debut. Cassius Clay also struggled on his debut against Tunney Hunsaker. Big Joe Bugner got sparked in his first fight. Pat Cowdell, a bronze medallist in the Montreal Olympics, looked terrible on his debut against fellow Brummie Albert Coley.
