Randall Tex Cobb

This interview with Johnny Carson popped up on my news feed the other day. Cobb was just slightly before I got into boxing, so I'd never seen him fight, just read snippets in magazines. I knew him more from his appearances in films, Raising Arizona being the main one. I also never knew he was a kickboxer before switching to boxing.
He comes across as a funny, switched on and surprisingly articulate guy, not what you'd expect judging from his appearance which more than played a part in his movie roles.
What a tough SOB as well. I watched a short documentary about him after the interview, his fight with Shavers was just a drag out brawl.

Thanks for the post, I hadn't seen those clips before but had watched some of his matches and read some interviews with and on Tex.

Posts on Tex usually seem to focus on his unique character then ultimately his skill shortcomings, he had a good career if you look at how many contenders he took on and he did pack a punch despite his reputation amongst boxing fans as a punchbag. I would've loved having the same career as Tex.... I wouldn't want his looks though! :D

I thought he was a fictional character until just know.

Did he get in trouble for using the N word?

Apartheid was still in tact in America in those days, blacks had to sit at the back of the bus, had different hospitals, swimming pools etc

Ive found this quote after a good search:

On another occasion, he was at some dinner function where a slew of prominent 70's and 80's heavyweights were in attendance. Cobb of course was asked to speak, and on the podium he said "What a bunch of baaaad ass n****rs we have here tonight." Among those in attendance was Renaldo Snipes, who stood up in protest at the peceived racial slur.

Cobb calmly replied, "I wasn't referring to YOU, Mr. Snipes."

I’ve found an alternative quote where he says “Nah, I meant the bad ones”

I’m reading more and more and he seems utterly hilarious.
