I think it'd be a good competitive fight for a time, but I can't imagine Toney wouldn't catch and knock out Bute somewhere along the way.

I feel like Bute could box on even terms with him for a great portion of the bout, but his chin would ultimately fail him against Toney.

That said, if we take Toney from the Barkley fight - I think, this James beats Bute from pillar to post (IMO).

The reason I mentioned Barkley fight is because that was the fight where Toney wasn't f*cking around (the way he did in some fights) and came to work right from the get go. I also think he was at his sharpest that night.

Sometimes a guy looking at their sharpest is a combination of the shape they're in and the guy they're fighting.

Yes, indeed. But Toney used to have struggles with guys that are taking it to him (who, on paper, should suit him). In other cases, he was lethargic. Not against Barkley, though.

That said, you are not wrong. Toney didn't have to look for Iran. But I always felt that Toney was really zoned in and on his game that night, regardless of Barkley's style.

As of Bute - stylistically, he could've given Toney fits. Would he? IDK. But I think he was always opened for straight punches. Toney's right hand would be finding its mark pretty often, I think. It would've been even more effective against a southpaw.
