Jermell Charlo’s difficult year got worse last weekend.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the former undisputed 154-pound champion was arrested Saturday in his home state of Texas. According to jail records in Fort Bend County, Charlo was charged with misdemeanor assault, though details of the incident weren’t available Wednesday.

Charlo, 33, has been released. The Daily Mail reported Wednesday that Charlo allegedly assaulted a family member.

Charlo, who resides in the Houston suburb of Richmond, lost a unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez on September 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He was the fully unified 154-pound champion when he agreed to move up two weight classes to challenge Alvarez for the Mexican superstar’s IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO 168-pound championships in a Showtime Pay-Per-View main event.

Alvarez knocked down Charlo in the seventh round of a fight that was not competitive and won by scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 118-109.

Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) was stripped of his WBO junior middleweight title as soon as he entered the ring to face Alvarez. He has since given up his IBF junior middleweight title, but Charlo still owns the WBA and WBC 154-pound crowns.

Jermell Charlo was arrested Saturday in Texas and charged with misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to a family member, a Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office public information officer told ESPN on Wednesday.

Charlo, 33, was released after bond was posted Monday, according to court records.

The victim of the alleged assault was not named. On Tuesday, according to court records, Charlo's wife, Chyane Westbrook, filed for a temporary restraining order along with a divorce from Charlo.

Charlo fights under the Premier Boxing Champions banner. A PBC representative did not respond to a text message seeking comment.

In May 2018, Charlo was charged with felony domestic violence after he allegedly choked his then-girlfriend. The following year, he was acquitted after a jury found him not guilty.

Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) is a unified junior middleweight champion and is ESPN's top boxer at 154 pounds. He moved up to 168 pounds in September for a career-best opportunity against boxing's top star, Canelo Alvarez. Charlo lost virtually every round and was dropped in Round 7 in a unanimous decision defeat for the undisputed super middleweight championship.

His twin brother, Jermall Charlo, is the WBC middleweight champion.

From what I can find the incident has not been fleshed out, not that I am particularly interested in the case beyond the accused having his right to due process upheld.

Damn the Charlo bros are making it very difficult to like them. Which is a shame, they both my favourite boxers of these days. My daughter likes them too but I guess I have to tell her the truth

Who the hell would like the Charlo brothers? Guys seemed off the entire time they were coming up. I remember their piece of work crew was throwing up gang signs to Danny Jacobs of all damn people when one of them got in Jacobs' face. Jacobs is like one of the nicer guys in the sport.
