Deontay Wilder vs Alexander Povetkin (2016)

This fight should've happened back in May 2016, but was cancelled roughly a week before the event took place. As you remember, Povetkin failed PED test. Otherwise, Wilder would've travelled to Russia.
Now, Povetkin is already retired. And Wilder(probably) won't be around for too long.
But going back to 2016, what were your thoughts on this fight back then?

Povetkin way ahead on cards before getting caught by Wilder around the 9th round

I always thought Povetkin would've knocked out Wilder.
I still think it.

Up until 2016, I firmly believed that Povetkin would have been too much for Wilder. That's because, at that time and during years prior, Al was fighting like a human bull-dog, capable of non-stop punching and carrying devastating, one-punch KO power. He was still exceptionally strong too.
As for Wilder, up through those years, he was still showing that he often struggled with extremely aggressive, hard punching infighters, even though he always knocked them out in the end. So, Deontay was vulnerable in some ways as of 2016.
For these reasons, I say Povetkin breaks down and knocks out Wilder if they fought in 2016. The end probably comes sometime between the seventh and tenth rounds.
But, if this pair were to fight anytime after 2016, I'd pick Deontay to knock Povetkin cold. That's because after 2016, Povetkin got soft and Wilder got a hell of a lot better.

Yes, it emerged that Povetkin was using some kind of PED's. That may explain why he was fighting like tornado, overwhelming almost everyone at that time.
For certain, Povetkin went into athletic decline after he was no longer permitted to use whatever PED's he'd been taking up until 2016.

Good analysis, Jason.
