Just a thought really.

If Herbie was boxing today how far do you think he would have gone?

In context to the heavies around right now, who could he have beaten do you think?

Too weak chinned and fragile mentally. Only fighter I've seen knocked down by a fainting spell (Bowe) and KOd by a jab (Klitschko).

He benefitted from the WBO being a second division belt and his British and 'world' title winning opps were Michael Murray, Michael Bentt, 40 year old shot Tony Tucker, Damon Reed and Willi Fischer. Just laughable.

Usyk, AJ, Fury, Parker, Wilder etc would go through him.

Just a punchers chance really. If he landed on Fury or AJ it could have been messy. But Hide’s chin was obviously very weak. Seemed fairly competent as a cruiserweight at the end of his career.

Even during that cruiserweight run it looked not too far from an accident despite weak opposition. I’m sure he either made it to or was a fight away from a mandatory shot at the WBC cruiserweight title during that run.

Punchers chance. Remember him getting sparked by Chingangu on BBC, was never really a HW. Gutsy though. Albeit bonkers.

definitely a barren night for boxing when we're discussing Herbie. Just been on boxrec to see if there is any televised boxing, even random stuff and can't find any. Sad times.

Last I heard about Hide he was back in Nigeria, also something about a gun and dead body at a party. Was an exciting fighter though. Certainly has kept out of the public eye

As others here have said. He would be outweighed by a good 3 stone at least by most decent heavies today.
If Ruiz is considered a top heavyweight, and Wilder managed to have such a long reign at the top .. then I think with the right people behind him Hide could certainly sit towards the top somewhere.

He always had the potential to beat the big guys with his speed and power but he wasn’t the biggest at HW and more importantly lacked a world class chin and heart.

I’ll get laughed at for this - but I think he’d have every chance of knocking out Wilder.

I worked with Herbie for a couple of years. It was an interesting ride, but I have nothing but fondness and affection for him. (He probably wouldn’t even remember me).

Interesting, what was he like?

He certainly hurt Bowe in the 3rd and, if I remember correctly, Bowe commented that it was the hardest he'd been hit? He completey fell apart after that and apparently, couldn't even run a full lap of a running track prior to the fight, so couldn't have been in shape for a fight of that magnitude.
My favourite Herbie moment was after that 3rd round, where he hurt Bowe, went after him, but then suddenly went down and appeared completely exhausted. The Dr came to his corner to ask him if he knew what he was doing:
"I'm fighting for the fking championship!"
"Do you know where you are?"
"I'm at the MGM fighting Riddock fking Bowe!"

athletically gifted with his good speed, power, and mobility, but jeez his nerves were so bad vs vitali and bowe. looked utterly terrified. some of the kds im not sure if it was really because he was that hurt, or if he went down because the canvas was a safe place.

might be able to spring some good wins, but his mental and physical fragility would get him soon enough at world level even in weak eras. i think he'd have been more interesting at a cruiser, i suspect he wouldnt be as intimidated and even around 40 he managed to become a fringe contender with his late run there

but at hw i would go for akinwande over herbie as the better wbo champ tbh

Akinwande would have knocked out Hide I think. The Vitali defeat was an odd one. Very confident after a great round one. But then a bad knock out in round 2. Def the end of the line for his heavyweight world level adventure.

He should have been a career cruiser but understandably chased the heavyweight dough

Heard a few interviews on where he’d try to KO everyone in sparring including middleweights. Tells me all I need to know. Bully who will
Fold over someone bigger and tougher.

Yes I’ve heard that too, I can’t remember who it was but he sparred a much smaller guy and Hide went all out on him, the guy left the gym and came back with a weapon to attack him.

Also below story about Hide from Johnny Nelson

“Herbie Hide once came to one of the exhibitions with us. He had already been world heavyweight champion,” added Nelson. “We were in a prison that absolutely stinks. You had prisoners there who were jeering and shouting. Herbie got in there and still wanted the respect of a champion. He gets in the ring with a prisoner. Brendan tells Herbie, ‘You’re not allowed to hit him.’ So Herbie’s getting out of the way, but the guy caught him with a shot. Herbie turned around and started battering him. The prisoners then started getting up and shouting and going mad. The prison officers had to come in to try to calm it down. Brendan went mad at Herbie.”

Didn't have many beans before the Parker fight .
Maybe the tins were too heavy to open .

As others have stated, a bully. He'd get battered at the top table now, as he did in his prime.

At Cruiser though, he could be a force as long as his opponent doesn't hit him back.

Kind of a shame that famous card never came off due to financial issues - Hide v Morrison and Bruno v Mercer. I think logically both Brits would have been stopped, but it would have been a big landmark for British heavyweights.
