Shakur Stevenson says he’s giving up boxing at age 26.
Shakur Stevenson has announced his retirement from boxing at age 26, posting to social media this evening.
Stevenson, who currently holds the WBC lightweight title and has also won belts at featherweight and super featherweight, last fought in November, beating Edwin De Los Santos in one of the most unwatchable fights of 2023.
“I’m officially retiring from the sport of boxing,” he wrote on X. “I’ll be in the gym forever perfecting my craft and helping the next generation become great and chase they dreams, but I ain’t (fornicate with) this weak boxing game.”
Stevenson won a silver medal representing the United States at the Rio Olympics in 2016, and has obviously had major success as a professional since turning over in the spring of 2017.
Rightfully so, this will be treated with major skepticism by boxing fans and observers. If he officially vacates his 135 lb title, it may be taken more seriously, but until then, this probably won’t be taken much more seriously than Top Rank stablemate Teofimo Lopez’s “shock retirement” last June, which did not last once it was clearly stated to him that he’d have to give up the belt he held at the time.
Lopez is scheduled to fight Jamaine Ortiz on Feb. 8, and odds are we’ll wind up telling you what Stevenson’s next fight is soon enough.

After his last fight hes probably getting low ball offers. He stunk the joint out on a new level in that fight. Wilfully committing to going the 12 rounds running all night.

Shakur is an excellent fighter but he had 2 poor fights last year and only fights twice a year now. Yet is paid something like $5m a fight.
I assume he was expecting to be fighting Navarette next which now isn’t going to happen so we’ll probably get another poor fight.

Nava has been ordered for a vacant belt at 135..
So maybe they look at a unification later this year.

I’m sure they will but I’d imagine Stevenson is rightly pissed off that it’s looking like he’s got another marking time fight coming up.
Some potential big fights after with probably Loma and Navarette being available.

He's a great boxer, won world titles at 3 weights, and medalled at Olympics as a teenager. Still only 26. He can be a tad boring to watch though.

‘See ya’ll in June’: Shakur Stevenson says he’ll be back in action this summer
Only weeks after supposedly retiring from the sport, Shakur Stevenson says he’s ready to resume his career.
Less than two full weeks after announcing his retirement from boxing on social media, Shakur Stevenson now announces that he’ll be making his return this summer, with the hash tag ‘chasing greatness’ that followed.
“I’ll fight any and everybody, this is what I do. See ya’ll in June,” Stevenson posted on X.
When a commenter mentioned the abrupt 180 degree turn from Stevenson, particularly given it’s been less than a month of ‘retirement,’ Stevenson joked that he just couldn’t stay away.
“I know, right. Couldn’t keep myself away from it. Love this shit too much,” Stevenson posted.
That Stevenson will be returning to the ring comes as no surprise to just about anybody, as no one took his retirement claim seriously, but the optics surrounding it all isn’t going to endear Stevenson to fans much as the whole charade was painfully transparent from the beginning.
No opponent has been mentioned at this stage.

Excellent fighter but you’d have a hard time thinking of a more unlikeable individual in the sport at the minute

I wouldn't want to see his next fight after his last one. Half the arena was empty by the midway point.
