Eddie Hearn provides big venue update for major trilogy fight

Katie Taylor and Chantelle Cameron are heading for a third meeting, but the trilogy fight still doesn't have a venue.

Eddie Hearn has been eager to use Croke Park in Dublin to stage a Taylor fight, but numerous obstacles have prevented that fight from happening and now a different setting must be found.

Last year, Cameron became ethe first person to defeat Taylor when she went to the 3Arena in Ireland’s capital.

In an immediate rematch, Taylor produced one of the best performances of her career to level the series at 1-1, and now we’ll find out who is the better boxer when they clash again.

“For us we still like the idea of fighting Chantelle Cameron,” said Hearn when speaking to Boxing Social.

“We’d like to do that outdoors. You have to lock something in at some point. We’ve had two incredible nights at the 3Arena. It could be a third.

“We’ve had offers from the around the world. There is a chance she could fight internationally and of course there is America.”

You may as well remove the KO option for both lasses.

More chance of John Fury fighting Micky Theo than a KO in that rubber match

WBC have ordered the fight.

Hearn said maybe only Croke Park will get Taylor back out for one last fight.

named a few boxers but said they weren't interesting.

Pretty sure a trilogy with the only woman she lost to is pretty interesting.

Katie Taylor-Chantelle Cameron trilogy clash ordered by WBC

Katie Taylor will have to enter her second straight trilogy if she wants to keep her undisputed championship reign intact.

Boxing Scene confirmed that the WBC has ordered a 140lbs title consolidation bout between Ireland’s Taylor, 25-1 (6 KOs), and England’s Chantelle Cameron, 21-1 (8 KOs). Both parties were formally informed earlier this month and instructed to enter talks for what will be a third meeting between the pair of pound-for-pound entrants.

Taylor is the lineal, WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO junior welterweight champion and is promoted by Matchroom Boxing. Cameron holds the WBC interim title at 140lbs and is now with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), after previous stints with Matchroom and Queensberry Promotions.

“The WBC Women’s Championship Committee hereby orders the WBC Women’s [140lbs] championship,” WBC Women’s Championship chairman Malte Muller-Michaels informed Matchroom and MVP in an official ruling obtained by Boxing Scene. “We hereby kindly ask you to start free negotiations to find an agreement regarding the conditions (date, place, purses, etc.) for this important fight.”

The two sides have until August 28 at noon to reach a deal. Otherwise, a purse bid hearing will take place on that date and time from WBC headquarters in Mexico City, Mexico.

Taylor and Cameron have lost only to each other.

Cameron won their first meeting in May 2023 on the road at 3Arena in Dublin. The bout marked Taylor’s first-ever pro fight in her home country, a night originally reserved for an undisputed lightweight championship rematch with Amanda Serrano.

Plans changed when Serrano did not heal in time from prior injuries, at which point Taylor opted to move up in weight to take a shot at Cameron’s fully unified 140lbs crown. Cameron prevailed via majority decision to ruin Taylor’s homecoming.

Taylor – a 2012 Olympic gold medalist – avenged the defeat six months later via majority decision at the very same venue to become a two-division undisputed champion. She subsequently relinquished her 135lbs titles and twice successfully defended her 140lbs crown.

Both wins came against Serrano, and on Netflix. Taylor outpointed the Boricua southpaw via unanimous decision in their rematch last November at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. She repeated the feat on July 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the site of their first fight, won by Taylor in a split decision in their April 2022 instant classic.

Cameron has won three straight since her second bout with Taylor. Her first fight back came with the WBC interim 140lbs title at stake, which she claimed in a 10-round majority decision win over Elhem Mekhaled. She enjoyed more decisive victories in title defenses against Patricia Berghult and Jessica Camara.

The latter bout took place on the Taylor-Serrano III undercard, after which point Cameron placed her focus squarely on facing Taylor a third time.

Taylor was initially dismissive of the matchup, challenging Cameron to instead prove she can carry her own card and bring something to the table to make the fight even bigger.

That dynamic has now greatly changed with the WBC’s recent ruling.

Taylor, as good as she is. And I highly rank her as one of best females out there.
Her legacy will have some questions makes.

Questionable decisions.

The fights she ‘lost’, there was no shame in them. Losses don’t make your resume weak.

ATG’s have losses. It not just about who you lost to, or how you lost.

She could easily have 3 more losses and I’d still sing her praises as one of the best.

Katie Taylor: Eddie Hearn says Irish boxer could be tempted by 'spectacular' homecoming fight

Katie Taylor is set to be offered a "spectacular" homecoming fight in Dublin that could tempt her to continue a legendary boxing career.

The 39-year-old Irish superstar admitted that she was considering retirement in July after defeating Amanda Serrano in a trilogy fight for the undisputed super-lightweight titles in New York.

But her promoter Eddie Hearn plans to hold fresh talks with Irish Minister for Sport Charlie McConalogue about a farewell bout at Croke Park in Dublin.

"After the last fight with Amanda Serrano, it's the first time I've heard her say in a press conference 'if I fight again'," Hearn told Sky Sports.

"It's been a remarkable career. It would be a great way to go out by winning the trilogy against Amanda Serrano but the lure of a Croke Park fight would be something quite spectacular

"She's got a few injuries at the moment. She won't fight again this year and she may not fight again. But if the Croke Park opportunity presents itself, it would be very difficult for her to turn down.

"For me, the greatest female fighter of all-time, probably one of the greatest sportspeople from Ireland.

"She's an absolute icon and a credit to the sport. If that's the end of the road. What a career, what a legacy, what a journey but I can also see her having another couple of fights.

"We will sit down in a couple months and we will definitely speak to the sports minister in Ireland, who's been vocal about the possibility and desire to host a Katie Taylor fight in Ireland.

"Katie Taylor in Croke Park would be something we would never forget."

The WBC have confirmed that Chantelle Cameron is the mandatory challenger for Taylor's WBC belt.

Cameron, who handed Taylor her only professional defeat before losing a rematch, is aiming to enforce a trilogy fight.

"The WBC has ordered the fight and if no agreement is reached, a purse offer will take place," WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told Sky Sports.

But it remains to be seen if Taylor will face Cameron again after she questioned the popularity of her British rival.

"I think Chantelle has to see if she can sell out a 1,000-seat arena first. I don't think she can sell out any stadium at all," said Taylor after her third win over Serrano.

"I think I've made her more money than she really deserves to be quite honest."

I don't think the third fight will ever happen. Super lightweight is Cameron's weight class and she already beat Taylor once. It wasn't Amanda Serrano's best weight class and I thought she beat Taylor at least once in their trilogy. Also, Cameron is five years younger than Taylor who is 39. Even Cameron doesn't expect Taylor to fight her again. I think Holly Holm (age 43) is a possible opponent for Taylor. Holm is expected to fight whoever wins Stephanie Han vs. Paulina Angel for the WBA lightweight title. Holm can probably beat either one of them. Then Holm can move up one weight class to fight Taylor at super lightweight and then I think both of them will retire. I think a Holm vs. Taylor fight would be lucrative considering they are both among the best female boxers of all time, but they are both probably past their prime.

If Taylor fights in Croke Park, I don't think it will be against Cameron. She doesn't want to lose her last fight in her home country.

KATIE TAYLOR-CHANTELLE CAMERON III: WBC GRANT 21-DAY EXTENSION ON NEGOTIATION PERIOD

The WBC have extended the negotiation period for the junior welterweight trilogy clash between champion Katie Taylor and mandatory challenger Chantelle Cameron.

The pair are locked at 1-1 after sharing two unforgettable fights during 2023. Cameron won the first via majority decision to claim the undisputed 140-pound titles at Dublin's 3Arena on May 20.

Then Taylor avenged defeat in their November 25 rematch, when another majority decision went in her favour at the same venue.

Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) has since successfully defended the belts she won back that night with back-to-back victories against Amanda Serrano, further cementing her place as perhaps the greatest female boxer in history.

But now her next move seems less clear. Her promoter Eddie Hearn recently told The Ring the 39-year-old might retire unless she can get a fight outdoors at Croke Park in Dublin.

Meanwhile, 34-year-old Cameron (21-1, 8 KOs) has been steadily working towards another shot at the belts she lost against Taylor. She became WBC interim champion in her first fight back and has since defended that belt twice.

Most recently she beat Jessica Camara on the Taylor-Serrano III undercard at Madison Square Garden in her first fight since signing with Most Valuable Promotions.

Shortly after that night in New York, the WBC officially ordered Taylor-Cameron III and set a deadline of 21 days for negotiations.

However, on the last day of that period, it is understood that Taylor's team requested an extension and the WBC have agreed to allow another 21 days for negotiations.

Now Cameron has accused Taylor of simply delaying what she believes is the inevitable vacation of the belt given that the two sides have not discussed the potential fight once since the WBC's order.

She wrote on social media: "Today was the day for Katie and her team to come to some kind of agreement with my team, to either fight me or vacate the world title belt which I think was really reasonable considering I've spent the last two years getting back in position to fight for it since losing it in our rematch back in October 2023.

"This is the second extension that's been granted. Hopefully this is the final extension/deadline and the belt is vacated as I don't think Katie and her team want the fight, which is fair enough, but the 140lb division should crack on.

"Zero negotiations had even been attempted so this is just a delay to stop the belt from being vacated, but no attempt at all to defend it against me. Crazy."

Katie Taylor granted extension for Chantelle Cameron

Katie Taylor was granted another three weeks to either work out terms with Chantelle Cameron or stall out her longtime rival, depending on the viewpoint.

The negotiation period for the WBC-ordered trilogy clash was extended through September 18, upon request from the team surrounding Ireland’s Taylor, the two-division and reigning undisputed 140lbs champion.

As previously reported by BS, the two sides had been instructed to reach a deal by August 28 to avoid a purse bid hearing for their mandatory title fight. However, WBC officials agreed to further push out its deadline to accommodate Taylor, despite the public disappointment expressed by England’s Cameron, 21-1 (8 KOs).

“[Thursday] was the deadline for Katie and her team to come to some kind of agreement with my team to either fight me or vacate the [WBC title],” Cameron posted on her Instagram account. “Which I thought was reasonable considering I’ve spent the last 2 years getting back in position to fight for it. Since losing it in our rematch back in 2023.

“This is the second extension that’s been granted. Hopefully, [this] is the final extension/deadline and the belt is vacated as I don’t think Katie and her team want the fight, which is fair enough. But the 140 division should crack on.”

Taylor, 25-1 (6 KOs), is represented by Matchroom Boxing and manager Brian Peters, both entities for the entirety of her pro career. Cameron is signed to Most Valuable Promotions.

There is clearly no love lost between the two boxers, each responsible for the lone career defeat on the other’s record.

Taylor outpointed Serrano, a southpaw from Puerto Rico, via unanimous decision in their rematch last November at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. She repeated the feat on July 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the site of their first fight, won by Taylor in a split decision in their April 2022 instant classic.

Cameron has won three in a row since her second bout with Taylor, including a victory over Jessica Camara on the Taylor-Serrano III undercard.

Her first fight back came with the WBC interim 140lbs title at stake, which she claimed in a 10-round majority decision win over Elhem Mekhaled. She enjoyed more decisive victories in title defenses against Patricia Berghult and Camara.

Taylor was initially dismissive of the matchup, challenging Cameron to instead prove she can carry her own card and bring something to the table to make the fight even bigger.

With the WBC’s recent ruling, that dynamic has now greatly changed.

EDDIE HEARN EXPECTS KATIE TAYLOR TO VACATE WBC TITLE DESPITE RECENT EXTENSION

LONDON, England - Eddie Hearn is expecting The Ring and undisputed champion Katie Taylor to vacate her WBC junior welterweight title this month with a return not likely until 2026.

Taylor is currently holds all of the belts having won them back in her Dublin rematch with Chantelle Cameron in November 2023.

She has since successfully defended them in back-to-back victories over Amanda Serrano but now the pressure is on from the WBC to defend against Cameron, who has been her long-time mandatory challenger.

The WBC last month ordered Taylor to face her rival from Northampton in a trilogy fight and gave the two teams 30 days to reach an agreement on the fight. However, as reported by The Ring, Taylor’s team requested an extension on that period and have been granted an additional 21 days to make a deal.

Cameron, who is currently the WBC’s interim champion at 140 pounds, revealed she was surprised by the request given the two sides have not held any negotiations whatsoever. Now Taylor’s promoter Hearn has told The Ring that he expects the Irish legend to vacate or be put into recess despite the extension.

He said: “The issue is time. I don't think Katie's thinking about fighting now and she's not going to fight until next spring at the earliest.

“When you you get a purse bid at the end of a negotiation period, the fight's got to happen within 90 days, which is at the moment December 1. We're miles away from fighting on that date at the moment.

“We're going to catch up with [Taylor’s manager] Brian Peters and Katie when we're in Ireland for the Paddy Donovan against Lewis Crocker fight later this month [Sept. 13]. We will then just decide what we're going to do.

“I don't think Katie’s going to be dictated to by a governing body but the problem is if she fights again, I don't see her fighting until next spring, summer.

“So that means based on the current situation she will have to vacate. But she does have some injury niggles from the last fight so perhaps she gets put into recess. I don’t know.”

Hearn had been in conversation with Cameron’s promoter Nakisa Bidarian, the co-founder of MVP, who recently told the BBC that he hopes to stage Taylor-Cameron III outdoors at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland.

But the Matchroom boss revealed that he suggested a clash with another of his fighters for Cameron.

“I said to Nakisa that I think the fight is Chantelle Cameron against Sandy Ryan,” he added. “Because style-wise I just think it’s an absolute thriller.”

Ryan, the former WBO welterweight champion, has not boxed since March when she dropped a unanimous decision in her rematch against Mikaela Mayer following defeat to her six months earlier.

But Ryan is hoping to get back to winning ways on Saturday in Sunderland when she faces Jade Grierson (5-0-1, 2 KOs). Hearn added: “Sandy’s fight in Sunderland is going to be at about 143 pounds so she will be a bit lighter than she was at welterweight.

“I think she would be up for getting down to 140 if it meant a fight with Chantelle.”

CHANTELLE CAMERON SLAMS KATIE TAYLOR AFTER 'POINTLESS' WBC DELAY

LONDON — Chantelle Cameron had expected to start this week as the WBC junior welterweight champion.

The WBC ordered undisputed champion Katie Taylor to defend against its interim titleholder Cameron and instructed both sides to reach a deal by Aug. 28 to avoid a purse bid hearing.

But with zero discussions between the sides about the matchup, Cameron expected Taylor to vacate the green and gold strap as she plots a return to the ring next year.

Instead, Taylor’s team requested a last-minute extension on the negotiation period and the WBC obliged, with Sept. 18 set as the new date.

Cameron, who won the interim title in July 2024 and has racked up two successful defences since, was mystified with the request given the lack of communication with Taylor and her promoter Eddie Hearn’s suggestion that the Irish icon might even retire.

Taylor and Cameron, of course, have history given their two memorable fights in 2023. Cameron successfully defended her 140-pound belts in their first clash with a majority decision in Dublin. Six months and five days later, Taylor had her revenge by edging a majority decision after 10 more action-packed rounds in the Irish capital.

It has at times been a bitter rivalry, and now Cameron has accused the 39-year-old of purposely jeopardizing her career by what she perceives as a "pointless delay."

“She doesn’t want the fight with me,” Cameron told The Ring. “And her team don’t want the fight, either. I feel like this is all just a ploy and a game. It’s crazy because if you don’t want to fight me, that’s absolutely fair enough, but let’s just both go on our own paths.

“There’s no need for this delay, it’s pointless. I think it's a game, and it just shows you people's character. Why would you do that to someone else's career? Fair enough, you have rivalries and stuff, but you shouldn't try and jeopardize someone else's career when you know that you're going to vacate anyway.

“I thought I was going to be elevated to full world champion, but my manager phoned me to tell me the bad news. I thought he was joking, but he was deadly serious. I thought he would be telling me I was champion and that I could make my first defence, but instead it was that I just have to wait even longer.”

Cameron’s last outing came on the undercard of Taylor’s victory over Amanda Serrano on July 11 at Madison Square Garden, a unanimous decision over Jessica Camara. It was Cameron’s first fight of her new deal with Most Valuable Promotions, but she says the hold up with the WBC is preventing her from moving on to her next fight.

She added: “It’s really tricky because we can’t plan ahead. We’re stuck in the mud. All I know is I’m going to be boxing for the world title, but there can’t be any real negotiations with any opponents because we don’t know what will happen with the belt.

“So now I’ve got a few more weeks of waiting. But I can handle that. I’ve waited long enough already.”

During an interview with The Ring this week, Hearn suggested that instead of a trilogy fight between Taylor and Cameron, the 34-year-old from Northampton should have an all-British derby with former welterweight champion Sandy Ryan instead. Cameron does not agree.

“It’s not a fight I would welcome,” she said. “Sandy is coming off two losses to Mikaela Mayer. What does beating her do for me?

“Eddie has always talked about that fight, but give me Katie Taylor first and then I’ll give him what he wants by fighting Ryan. For the time being, Sandy’s not on my radar.”

Katie Taylor becomes WBC 'Champion in Recess' amid hiatus to deal with 'personal matters'

Katie Taylor has been recognised as 'Champion in Recess' by the World Boxing Council as the undisputed super-lightweight world champion takes time away from the sport.

The WBC strap is one of the belts currently held by the Bray boxer alongside the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, and The Ring titles, all of which she retained following her victory in the trilogy fight against Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden, New York in July.

Chantelle Cameron was due to be the mandatory challenger for her WBC belt - an opponent that Taylor lost to by majority decision in May 2023 at the 3Arena before avenging what remains her only professional defeat six months later at the same Dublin venue.

However, the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has announced that Taylor will not be taking on Cameron because she intends to step away from the sport for a time in order to deal with "personal matters".

He said: "She let us know that she plans to take some time away from the ring to attend to personal matters. The fight she was obliged to take was against Chantelle Cameron; by naming her Champion in Recess, we will order Sandy Ryan to fight Cameron to ratify the WBC super lightweight world title."

According to the WBC, the 'Champions in Recess' status is afforded to boxers who "have had an outstanding career and achieved elite status in the sport" and is regarded as a lifetime honour that is designated in specific circumstances such as injuries, personal issues that lead to time away from sport or moving up in weight class.

While Cameron and fellow English fighter Sandy Ryan will now fight each other for the vacant WBC belt, the 'Champion in Recess' desgination would allow Taylor the chance to contend for the belt upon her return to the ring.

After her victory over Serrano two months ago, Taylor had played down suggestions that she was planning to retire but remained coy on her future intentions.

"I don't know. I’m just going to enjoy this victory right now, sit back and reflect and then I’ll make a decision," she responded when asked if that could be her swansong.

"I will make a decision on whether I will fight again in the future."
