Exactly 60 years ago tonight in the half-empty Miami Beach Convention Hall, a precocious upstart named Cassius Marcellus Clay shocked the world by pounding big, bad Sonny Liston into submission en route to capturing the greatest individual title in all of sports. Other monumental victories would follow over the next decade and a half -- including a TKO of the US Government -- but for my money the vanquishing of Liston stands as the "Louisville Lip"'s greatest triumph.

All things considered, especially what everyone thought at the time, I agree. His greatest triumph followed by the rumble in the jungle. Folks thought Clay/Ali would be killed literally.
