Has anyone been to boxing where “nobbins” has taken place.

Yep. First one I remember being at live was Lou Gent v Glazz Campbell when I was a kid. I thought it was kicking off, then my dad explained what it was.

I was at Haye-Harrison in Manchester.
It was tempting to chuck some copper coins during the first two and a half rounds.

very likely. I read about it iirc and it could really increase the purse if the crowd liked the fight. I think it was in Buncey's boxing history, or an old Nat Fleischer writing.

Remember that actually, not an awful long time ago - on a TV show, it was a great fight and the commentator said words to the effect of "that's uncalled for, after such a great fight the crowd are throwing things in the ring" - I might be wrong, but I thought it was coins.

I wasn’t there but I’m sure Gary Logan v Hussain Osman resulted in nobbins.

My mate had a brilliant 3x3s amateur bout years ago and a lot of nobbins were showered into the ring. Of course, because it was an amateur contest neither my mate or his opponent were allowed to take a single penny of it.

Seems harsh and possibly incorrect by the officials - it is not payment for fighting, but a gift from the spectators afterwards. There have been cases where amateur boxers received nobbins and did keep the money - e.g. Kirkland Laing had a fight as a schoolboy in the 1960s where that happened. In your mate's case, did he find out what the officials actually did with the money?

Andrew Wallace was one of the original ones but never fought because of injury. He was on the programme cover of the first class of 2002 show.

I thought Billy Corcoran was also part of the Class of 2002.

Daniel Cadman and John O'Donnell also came along a year or two later.

A solid stable of boxers and some great shows.

You'd do well to see better shows than what Hennessy Sports were putting on at the time. Some of those shows really lifted my enthusiasm for boxing.

olij999, Yes. The MC announced to everyone in attendance that because they were amateur boxers (or that it was an amateur contest) the participants were not allowed to receive the money and it would go to charity.

I've literally seen hundreds, if not thousands, of amateur bouts and I have never seen another amateur bout where nobbins were thrown into the ring.

is Hennessy stil active in the sport? I enjoyed their shows.

I believe he is. There's his daughter Fran and there may be some other boxers he's still involved with.

Mick's been written off more times than I care to remember in the past 20 years, but keeps going.

I thought Corcoran was part of the class of 2002 also.

Billy was boxing in 2002 on the same cards as "The real class of 2002".

One of my old trainer danny moirs fight drew nobbins in early 2000s...can't remember who with though ...but on post for rematch it said "drew nobbins last time"

In 1959 my dad boxed for the lyn as a light heavyweight ray shiel matchmaker said Pete your fellas not turned up fancy fighting that bloke over there he a heavyweight smoking a pipe well they had a punch up for 3 rounds both hitting the deck nobbins was thrown in turns out my dad was first person to go distance with him as he had knocked out his last 29 opponents and had just been to the olympics don’t know who his name was Never trusted the matchmaker again aparantly it was in the evening standard
