I have been very lucky indeed.

Over the last 24 years in boxing, I have worked for some fantastic people & some have become friends.

But way out in front as my number 1 favourite fighter and boxing personality was Clinton Woods.

To this day Clinton either rings me or goes on
Fb to rip into me. One stroke he pulled on me, myself and my mrs were invited to a party to celebrate Clintons and Ricky Hattons recent wins … I saw clinton and went up to him to see how he was and
I also asked how his dad keith was … clinton replied “he’s dead” … i was devastated and teared up and started blubbering… so you can imagine what I was like when keith walked around the corner and said “ hello spud”

I was made up when Clinton put a photo of me and him in his book.

When Clinton won the IBF World Light Heavyweight title against Rico Hoye was a very special evening.

Whilst Clinton lives comfortably in Sheffield and is happy I am a tadge disappointed he didn’t get a mega money fight.

thanks for sharing Spud. I liked Woods, can remember watching the fight vs Hoye, they'd built him up as this ex prisoner who was going to batter Woods and was 18 and 0, was a great win. It's here just rewatched it Clinotn fough everyone, only ever stopped once by RJJ and no shame in that. He was not meant to beat Crawford Ashley either was he, great win that too.

My favourite growing up is probably a few. I liked Robin Reid as remember when he won the WBC belt, and I used to watch him later on when he had fringe belts and after every fight I can remember him on BBC being interviewed saying "why won't you fight me Joe" referring to the contentious decision in the first fight.

I liked Lee Swaby too as remember him sparking Enzo on BBC in a big upset and was gutted when he didn't win the Brit title at CW, Lee lives near me and I'd followed him as a kickboxer so he was also a favourite. He's involved in a gym now and not many of the younger people know he was a boxer as he never talks about himself. My training partner does the security at those shows and just thought Lee was a nice older fella, I had to show him fighting Fury etc. I always like humble people.

And Bobby Vanzie, was slick and used to watch him on tv, really liked him.

Such a special win.

Some ways felt uncomfortable being famous.

iirc not films, magazines. I know he did some rubbish normal films. And now commentates on bare knuckle boxing. Still in good shape. He was a good amateur too, Olympic bronze.

Definitely cheated out of the Ottke win. The Calzaghe fight was razor close. Could have gone either way. Disappointing for Reid, but not a robbery

Clinton Woods was a class act. I remember reading about him in Boxing News and then seeing him lose to David Starie.

I wrote him off after that but he proved me wrong against Crawford Ashley (another favourite of mine) and hit a vain of form that pleasentedly surprised me.

Loved his down to earth personality and ring presence, I wish more fighters today were like him. The fact he was married to a Spaniard (my parents are Spaniards who came over in the 1960´s) made me a bigger fan and I was so chuffed when he destroyed Rico Hoye in a punch perfect fashion.

Hoye wasn´t a mug, He massacred Donnell Wiggins in 1, Wiggins was a former NABF champion and had boxed really well against an undefeated Jeff Lacy for 8 rounds. Wins over Richard Hall and Montell Griffin were pretty impressive, outside of Britain Rico was a favourite for some.

Glad to hear he is doing well. He retired perfectly and I hope he enjoys his ring retirement.

I'm certain the Calzaghe decision wasn't a robbery. We did a watch-a-long sort of thread on here a few years ago (one of Horse's better ideas, as I recall) and don't think a single person had Reid winning it. One of those which felt closer on the night as Reid landed a lot of eye-catching punches, but was a pretty clear Calzaghe win on a round by round basis.

But regardless, Reid was a top fighter and seems a bloody good guy

I agree on both fights, I just liked how much he mentioned it, "fight me Joe" is stuck in my head in his Mersey/Runcorn accent :)

When Robin Reid got robbed against Otke I remember his post fight interview where he said something along the lines of "the only way I'd have got the decision in Germany was if the judges had been my mum, my nan and my girlfriend. Might have got a draw then"

he got so many robberies, the Brewer one was bonkers, they fought twice both split decisions, he lost both. Mads Larsen got robbed too

he was a very good am, went to 3 Olympics, just fought at home and got loads of gifted decisions.
