Ali versus Spinks 1 or Holmes versus Norton ? To me, it's hard to believe that The Ring chose Ali versus Spinks as the round of the year.

Not just that as the Ring chose the first Muhammad Ali vs. Leon Spinks fight as the fight of the year over Larry Holmes vs. Ken Norton, who both put up greater performances, which I wonder why they chose Ali vs. Spinks I. Imo, I chose Holmes vs. Norton.

Larry Holmes vs Ken Norton round 15, to me, was better.

Holmes V Norton all the way.

Spinks V Ali 1 was a cracking round 15, no doubt, but unfortunately it occurred during the same year as Holmes V Norton, which was even better.

This sums it up nicely.

Thought Holmes-Norton was better as well. Btw-Norton should have got the round scored in his favor, but two of the three scored it for Holmes. If Norton would have got that round he would have won the decision.

rewatched holmes-norton last weekend.

love the way it builds up into that last round frenzy.

still say holmes in 9 rds to 6 territory is more on point. ;-)

I had it 8-7 for Holmes. Had him up 8-6 going into the last round. Gave Norton the last round. Norton was having a great round, then Holmes turned it around in the last minute or so. All three judges had it dead even going into the last round, but two of the three gave Holmes the 15th round.

Holmes-Norton is the better round but many people gave Holmes a real chance whereas seven-fight Spinks was an absolute no-hoper so I understand why Ring went with Spinks-Ali at the time. I can still remember waking up on a chilly February morning to learn that Spinks had pulled off the unbelievable.

Yes, it was on the box here but not 'live'. I heard the result on the radio.

It was live in the United States in primetime. I think it was on CBS. I saw it.

The fight was shown 'live' in cinemas over here in the UK (the old closed-circuit telecasts) but delayed on the BBC and ITV. I made sure to catch the rematch live at the Odeon in Birmingham and the atmosphere was electric as Ali danced his way to a record third heavyweight title, although he didn't have much to beat. The explosive Danny Lopez defended his WBC featherweight title in typical fashion on the bill, climbing up from a first-round knockdown to flatten Argentina's Juan Domingo Malvarez a round later with a brutal right hand. Lopez is generally overlooked these days but he was a thrilling fighter and never more dangerous than when hurt.
The real star of the night proved to be the lightly-regarded Mike Rossman of New Jersey, who humbled Victor Galindez in 13 one-sided rounds. Galindez had made 10 successful defences of his WBA light-heavyweight title but Rossman dished out a beating and looked set for a glittering future, although the boorish Galindez, bloodied and battered, made a point of walking over to Rossman at the stoppage as if to say 'we meet again'. He stopped Rossman in a bad-tempered rematch seven months later. Panama's Jorge Lujan retained his world bantamweight title on the show with a close but merited 15-round decision over Alberto Davila of Pomona in Los Angeles. Davila was a really good boxer who could do everything but Lujan was usually a step ahead in a fight for the purist. Boxing News editor Harry Mullan made the trip to New Orleans and described the show as the greatest he ever covered as a writer.
