Lamont Roach Jr vs Feargal McCrory set for June 28th on ProBox TV

Alright, bear with me here.

Earlier this year, the WBA officially installed Jono Carroll as super featherweight champ Lamont Roach Jr’s mandatory challenger. They also named Otar Eranosyan, who won a later eliminator, as next in line.

This being the WBA, of course, neither of those fights are on the docket. ProBox TV announced today that Roach will instead face no. 12 Feargal McCrory on June 28th in Washington, D.C.

“Becoming world champion was the greatest feeling in my life,” Roach said. “I’ve been waiting for that for a long time, since I was a kid, so fulfilling a dream come true was amazing.

“Beating Hector Garcia was the culmination of hard work paying off. That victory was a testament to my skills. But I want to put the division on notice against McCrory.”

“I can’t wait to fight in D.C.,” he said. “We’ve been waiting for this for years, D.C. has been waiting for this. I’m the first world champion since Lamont Peterson to fight at home and on the big stage, so it’s going to be special.

“I’m going to show I’m on a different level than McCrory, and I’m training as if I’m fighting a unification and that I’m on a level to unify the division.”

Roach (24-1-1, 9 KO) has fought just twice since 2021, but the second win was his biggest to date, as he edged out a listless Hector Luis Garcia for the belt last November. McCrory (16-0, 8 KO) is, on paper, a joke of an opponent in comparison. The 31-year-old has been scheduled for six rounds in seven of his last nine fights and has yet to beat someone with a pulse.

Ah, well. Wouldn’t be a WBA title reign without something like this cropping up.

1st defenses are usually gimme fights and this on paper looks just that. Covid curtailed the progress of a lot fighters with Feargal slated to fight at MSG on a Michael Conlon card when the pandemic hit. Since the world has opened up again McCrory has been starting to build some momentum though this fight looks to have come a few fights too soon for him but at 31 who can blame him for taking the chance he has been offered? He is unbeaten, hungry and tough. Though this fight appears a bridge too far at this point of his career.

those other fights would be better but i dont really mind it tbh, mccory obviously has a limited resume but he's looked decent and i'd think in his situation would be ultra motivated. roach is one of the weaker champs and is making a first defense. he should win but wouldnt surprise me if he has to work for it

roach busting mccrory through 4, had him rocked in 1 and 2 and dropped in 3. roach not much of a puncher so not a good look as far as ferg's chin goes. then ferg down multiple times to the body in the 4th, but makes it to the 5th

To be fair to Feargal he had never fought anyone remotely at Lamont’s level. He took his surprise chance with both hands and it was obvious he came to win. He did what most of us would want of him: he gave it a go and his heart and effort cannot be faulted. He was prepared to go out on his shield. While in the end his skills were short of world class he can be proud that he gave his all and tried to win. Respect!

Just got around to watching this, entertaining fight, due to Roach's skills and McCrory's balls, McCrory fought how he had to, put himself in harms way and put it on Roach, he had success but Roach was class, hurt him every round just about, he put McCrory down with a well timed left hook in the 3rd, didn't hurt him but still a quality shot, Roach had him down twice in the 4th, this time from body shots, right uppercut right into the solar plexus then whipped in a wicked left to the liver before the round was out, McCrory insanely tough kept coming and had a decent spell next couple rounds but Roach hurt him again in the 7th and it really should've been stopped by the ref or corner, Roach was teeing off on McCrory with every shot in the book, finally in the 8th McCrory's team threw the towel, Roach looked really good, showed good poise, variety and power
