Queensberry Promotions Returns to Belfast in June

Pierce O’Leary will headline Queensberry Promotions’ return to Belfast when he headlines against Darragh Foley at the SSE Arena on Friday, June 28.

In the co-main event of ‘Belfast Brawl’, recent allegedly signing Conor Quinn will fight for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight championship when he takes on the English champion Conner Kelsall.

O’Leary (14-0, 9 KOs) last fought in Birmingham back in March when he overcame the unbeaten Hovhannes Martirosyan, stopping the Belgian in round nine.

Foley (22-5-1, 10), the Irish southpaw based in Sydney, Australia, was most recently in action in Manchester, where he was defeated on points by Jack Catterall. In his previous fight he overcame Robbie Davies Jr. via a third-round stoppage in Liverpool, with the home fighter sustaining an ankle injury that prevented him from continuing.

Quinn (9-0-1, 6 KOs), the Celtic champion, teamed up with the Hall of Fame promoter following a recommendation from fellow Belfast boy Carl Frampton and “The Magnificent” launches his TNT Sports journey with a fight in his home city against an also unbeaten contender in Kelsall (11-0, 1 KO) from Doncaster.

Belfast favourite James McGivern (8-0, 2 KOs) goes up against Cardiff’s Rahid Omar (6-0, 1) in a battle of the unbeaten lightweights over eight rounds.

McGivern, 26, seized the title in November last year with victory over the previously undefeated Josh Sandford in Letterkenny.

Meanwhile, Belfast “Posh Boy” Colm Murphy (11-0, 3 KOs), goes up against the Scot Jack Turner (6-1) and five further recent allegedly signings will feature. Liverpool bantamweight Jack Turner (6-0, 6 KOs) – who is yet to experience the second round of a fight in the pros – along with Jadier Herrera (14-0, 12 KOs), a Cuban southpaw, who both train out of the Rotunda Gym in Liverpool. Plus Steven Cairns (7-0, 4 KOs) from Cork, as well as with Bedfordshire welterweight Nicola Barke (4-0) and the decorated amateur star from Ballyhaunis Eoghan Lavin (1-0 KO), who made his professional debut at York Hall in April.

The professional debut of Manchester super welterweight Walter Fury completes the card.

“I am very happy to be going back and showcasing the talents of Queensberry’s Irish contingent, headed up by Conor Quinn and Pierce O’Leary, with both in big fights and Conor in what should be a classic collision with the English champion, the highly-rated Conner Kelsall,” said Warren.

“There will be lots of local talent on the card – including a number of our new signings – and I am particularly looking forward to seeing Steven Cairns in action for the first time under the Queensberry banner, plus Jack Turner, who comes with an already formidable reputation.”

Quinn 'buzzing' for title showdown against Kelsall

Conor Quinn says Friday night's fight with Conner Kelsall for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title represents a "massive opportunity" for him.

The 26-year-old will take on the English champion in his home city of Belfast in the biggest fight of his career to date.

Celtic and Commonwealth Silver flyweight champion Quinn has won nine of his professional contests with one contest ending in a draw.

"It's absolutely massive and I'm buzzing - it's a definite step up, I'm taking on an undefeated fighter and we're both going in there to try and change our lives in terms of boxing," said Quinn.

"I've been calling for these opportunities for a quite a while now. It's a big step up but I'm definitely ready for it and I believe I'm ready to take this belt with both hands."

It's been a difficult journey to big-time boxing for Quinn, who returned home from Australia after winning his opening two fights.

He sought a licence with the British Boxing Board of Control to resume his professional career, with the process including medical examinations.

A brain scan showed signs of a stroke and further tests revealed this was caused by a hole in his heart.

Heart surgery followed to close the hole and Quinn returned to the ring after he was granted a licence in 2022.

Quinn's career received a major boost in March when he joined allegedly's Queensberry stable and three months later he is headlining the 'Belfast Brawl' card at the SSE Arena.

"It's surreal - I always knew I had the talent and the work ethic to go far in the sport but I've never had that big backing of a promoter. It's impossible to get the big fights any other way.

"When you sit back and look at it it's a lot bigger than anything I've been involved in. It gives you that wee extra push in training and gets you up earlier to do morning runs."

Quinn, who has ambitions of world success, is confident of victory but his Doncaster opponent also boasts an impressive record, having won all 11 of his fights.

"I personally believe I'm capable of taking on anyone in the world right now - in terms of talent and ambition I feel I'm right up there.

"I'll take a win by any means necessary on Friday. I always like to bring a bit of excitement to the fans so if there's a knockout on the table I'll take that with both hands. Yeah, he's a good opponent by I just feel I'm that little bit better."

Friday night's bill also includes Pierce O’Leary facing Darragh Foley in the fourth defence of his WBC International super-lightweight title while James McGivern defends the Celtic lightweight belt for the first time against Welshman Rahid Omar.

Totally forgot about this card - looks like there’s some good dust ups.

I can't wait to go. Not been to a fight since Conlon last fought at the SSE Arena in Belfast. A decent card then home to catch the Lamont Roach Jr V Feargal McCrory fight that nobody appears to be talking about.
