WHATS UP WITH DYNAMITE DOKES THESE DAYS?

No point in posting a thread about a prehistoric boxer like Michael Dokes on the retarded Current Scene forum (is he that guy who fought that Jack Johnson fella?)
Is Psycho Mike still in the can? He got sent down as i recall for 4 years in 99 for a horrific drug fuelled beating he delivered to his ex-girlfriend. Assuming he behaved himself in the joint he should be out & on the street now.
Anybody know what Dokes does these days to make a living? Is there any news on his time in prison? The most up to date info on the net regarding Dokes is the news paper coverage of his conviction from 6 yrs ago.
He woulda made a fascinating interview subject while on lock down.

As far as I know Dokes is still in jail.
The last I heard was about a year ago, whilst in prison Dokes had been sparring and weight training in the prison gym.
Dokes would only spar with other inmates on the condition that neither man through head shots.
Some silly inmate during one session, fancied his chances and punched Dokes in the face.
Dokes retaliated by shattering the other guys jaw.

Dokes story is quite a chilling view of how drugs can destroy someone.
He seemed to be a very intelligent guy early on, well spoken etc and he had the skills which could have kept him at the top for a long time... very sad.

Indeed, I am sure I remember reading many years ago that Dokes was also a qualified Chef?
Am I right in thinking that the girlfriend Dokes beat up said Dokes prior to that had never been violent towards here before?
I am sure I read that.

Yeah, I remember reading something along those lines... she said that he was a Jeckle and Hyde who was the nicest person when straight but drugs would turn him nasty. I think he was into crack cocaine which quite basically can drive you nuts.
I remember reading in an early interview about how Dokes prided himself on his cooking.
He used to throw roses to women at ringside before his fights.
He could have taken over from Holmes as the top heavy in the 80s I think... very talented allround boxer with great hand speed.

Hmmm i assume he is still in prison in that case.
Although Dokes was one of the top 80s heavies, i dont think he wouldve beaten Holmes. Not that i love Holmes or anything, i could see Page, Tubbs and Tucker doing a Witherspoon on him, but we never saw the best of Dokes so hard to judge. As soon as he picked up the title he was on crack and neither of his two defences were impressive because of it.

Whilst on the subject of Dokes I thought he was very lucky to keep his title in the Weaver rematch.

Yeah, Weaver should have won that fight... got a raw deal.
Holmes was definately the best of his time and one of the very best but had Dokes fulfilled his talent I think he could have taken over in the mid-80s... out of all Page, Witherspoon and Tubbs... Dokes was the biggest waste of talent imo.

I would say that Witherspoon was a better fighter than Dokes by some way.

Witherspoon was the more solid fighter but Dokes had more natural talent imo. His handspeed was amazing and he had a good punch too... I think Witherspoon tapped more into his talent than Dokes.... though he too became unmotivated and out of shape.

I watched Dokes blasting out poor old John L Gardner on DVD the other day, he was a helluva talent - blinding hand speed and real power too.
I got hold of it as I remember watching it at the time, and being highly impressed.
Funny as Reg Gutteridge is saying he doesn't pack much of a punch, just before Dokes lays out John L.....COLD.
Yes I recall him speaking about how he was a trained chef, and also his gimmick of throwing red roses to the crowd before his fights.
Hope he's got his life back together now.

Dokes was certainly a more accomplished amateur that Witherspoon was.
