Gurgen Hovhannisyan leads July 26th Most Valuable Prospects show in Miami

Gurgen Hovhannisyan missed all of 2023 but is 2-0 so far in 2024

Heavyweight prospect Gurgen “Big Gug” Hovhannisyan will continue a busy 2024 on July 26th when he faces Robert Hall Jr in the latest Most Valuable Prospects main event.

The show airs live on DAZN from Miami.

Fresh off a six-round beating of Michael Polite Coffie, Hovhannisyan (6-0, 6 KO) looked poised for a breakout 2023 after signing to face Charles Martin on the Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia undercard, but suffered a rib injury and withdrew less than three weeks from fight night. Once recovered, he lined up a showdown with Viktor Faust in the opening bout of PBC’s Errol Spence Jr vs Terence Crawford PPV, only for the latter to injure his back.

He’s since made up for lost time with two wins over limited competition in the span of four months. Hall (14-3, 11 KO) continues that trend, entering the ring on the heels of decision losses to Jerry Forrest and Roney Hines.

Also on tap are the latest from Amanda Serrano signee Krystal Rosado-Ortiz (3-0, 1 KO) and a heavyweight opener pitting David Garcia (6-0, 3 KO) against Dominicc Hardy (6-2, 4 KO).

I was impressed with Gurgen's ambition with the fight scheduled against Charles Martin after just 4 fights. However, since it was scrapped the three names he's faced instead haven't been as noteworthy. If he still has the same ambition and he can find an opponent with the name value or perhaps someone ranked high enough then he slingshots himself into top 25 conversations and would probably get himself an alphabet ranking.

Rivera stops Goodson in the 7th, dropping him 3 times before the ref stepped in, bit of a slowish start, both fighters sharp taking a look at one another but in the 3rd Rivera nailed Goodson with a huge right which stunned him before a cuffing right forced him down, Goodson recovered well but I expected a bit more devil in the work of someone who won all his fights by KO, Rivera tried to walk him down, work the body and land the right, Goodson's tricky though and looked like he might make the end but in the 7th Rivera found that right hand again and Goodson was down, he got up but another barrage ending in the right put him down a second time in the round, Rivera put it on him and when a left uppercut landed clean the ref seen enough
